Two loads, two causes
A Hytale server has two resources that can run short independently of each other:
- Memory - driven by the loaded area of the world. The farther players can see and the more spread out they are, the more chunks the server keeps in memory at the same time.
- Processor - driven by the number of simultaneous players and entities, meaning NPCs, creatures and moving objects.
That explains why two servers with the same number of players can run completely differently. Four players building a base together load a small area of the world. Four players exploring in four different directions load four times as much - with the same number of players.

The most important lever: view distance
No other value affects memory requirements as strongly. Hypixel recommends limiting the maximum view distance to 12 chunks - for performance and explicitly for the feel of the game as well. Because a Hytale chunk is 32 blocks wide, that comes to 384 blocks. For comparison: a Minecraft server sees 160 blocks by default.
You set the upper limit in the central config.json via MaxViewRadius:
- Stop the server.
- In
config.json, set theMaxViewRadiusvalue, for example to12or lower. - Save and start.
The radius affects the area quadratically: going from 12 down to 10 chunks shrinks the loaded area around each player by roughly 30 percent. In the game, you hardly notice it; in memory usage, you clearly do. Which other fields the file contains is explained in Hytale server settings.
Symptom: stuttering at high CPU load despite little activity
A warning sign every Java server knows: when memory runs short, it is not RAM usage that climbs endlessly, but CPU load. Java is then constantly busy cleaning up memory - the so-called garbage collection. Hypixel names exactly that as a typical symptom of insufficient memory.
If your server stutters at high processor load even though hardly any players are online and little is happening, the cause is therefore often the RAM, not the processor. The right order: lower the view distance and check mods first, then consider a bigger plan.
Symptom: stuttering when a lot is going on
If the load rises with the number of players and creatures, the processor is the bottleneck. Starting points:
- Check NPC spawns. In the
config.jsonof each world,IsSpawningNPCcontrols whether creatures spawn. For a pure building world, the switch can stay off. - Farms and collection points. Hundreds of animals or objects in a small space put a constant load on the server, even when nobody is looking, as long as the area is loaded.
- Plugins. Plugins that work constantly in the background cost processing time. Switching them off as a test shows whether one of them is to blame - see Install mods and plugins.
Several worlds: double the work
Hytale can run several worlds in one universe, and each of them runs on its own main thread. Two active worlds with players therefore mean nearly twice the work, plus the memory for both loaded areas. An event world that is only used on weekends is harmless. A second world that is played permanently belongs in your calculation when choosing a plan.
Let the view distance adjust automatically
In the server documentation, Hypixel names the Nitrado:PerformanceSaver plugin, which limits the view distance dynamically depending on resource usage. The idea behind it: when little is going on, players see far; when things get tight, the view distance drops before the server starts to stutter. For servers whose load fluctuates strongly, this is an elegant addition to the fixed upper limit. You install it like any other plugin via the mods folder.
Fixed restart times, for example at night, are also worth it. They clean up memory and load the world fresh. In the web interface, you create a task in the task scheduler for this. Before a restart that also affects mods or settings, a copy is worth it - see Create a backup.
Connection or server?
Not every stutter originates on the server. With /ping, you see the latency between you and the server. If it is high or jumps around, the problem lies along the way - in the Wi-Fi, on a busy connection at home or at the provider. If it is low and things still stutter, the server is working at its limit. Our location in Frankfurt am Main ensures short routes across Germany and central Europe. If the connection already fails while being established, the checklist in Fix connection problems helps.
When a bigger plan is the right answer
An upgrade makes sense when the view distance is already set moderately, the mods have been checked and the server still regularly hits its limit. Typical reasons are a growing community, a large mod collection or a second world that is played permanently. Plan M is designed for a fixed group of up to around eight players, plan L for community servers or first mod collections:
