Ten players, one world - and nobody has to leave their PC running

Valheim can also be played together straight from the game. The catch is well known: the world then lives on one player's computer. When that player is offline, the adventure stops, and everyone else has to live with the latency of their connection. A dedicated server turns this around - the world runs non-stop in the data center and does not wait for you.

In the unmodified game, ten players at the same time is the maximum. That is a limit of Valheim, not of our plans - we do not sell slots anyway. If you want a bigger group, you raise the limit with a server mod; plans L (around 20 players) and XL (30 and more) are designed for exactly that. Every player then needs the same mod.

For a vanilla group, something else decides which plan you need: how big your world grows. Every wall you build and every biome you explore is stored permanently in the world file, and over the months that is what costs memory.

Your characters are not affected by any of this: they are always stored locally with each player and travel with them from world to world.

The difference

  • World runs 24/7, even without you
  • Equally low ping for everyone
  • No PC that has to keep running
  • The world belongs to the group, not one host
  • Back up your world files any time

Your own world, your own rules, your own mods

Whether you start from scratch or bring your existing world along is up to you - either takes just a few minutes:

Move your world

A Valheim world consists of the .db file with the content and the .fwl file with the metadata. Upload both via the web file manager or SFTP and enter the world name.

New world any time

You change the world name yourself in your server settings. A new name creates a fresh world on the next start - the old world files stay where they are, so you can switch back at any time.

World modifiers

Combat difficulty, resource rates, death penalty or portal rules can be adjusted with presets and individual modifiers - set through the launch parameters.

Mods with BepInEx

The standard way to run Valheim mods is BepInEx - and you do not have to set it up yourself: switch the server type to BepInEx with one click, put your mods into the plugins folder and restart. All players need the same versions.

Password protection

A server password of at least five characters is part of Valheim and must not appear in the server name - which makes your world private automatically.

Crossplay

PC, Xbox, PS5 and Switch 2 meet on the same server. Crossplay is a launch parameter - without it, the server runs on the Steam backend and stays invisible to consoles.

Backups in your hands

Download your .db and .fwl regularly - especially before changing mods. The copies the game creates itself are stored on the same server and are no real backup.

Which plan fits your world?

Since a vanilla group ends at ten players anyway, world size and mod load usually decide the right plan - only once you raise the player limit with a mod does the head count matter. Guidelines:

Setup Description Recommended plan
Vanilla co-op Unmodified Valheim with a few friends - from the first raft all the way to the Deep North. Valheim S
Long-running world A world that grows over months: large bases, wide exploration, lots of building pieces. Valheim M
World modifiers Harder combat, adjusted resources or free portals - rules set through the launch parameters. Valheim M
Modded (BepInEx) Mods via BepInEx: quality of life, a bigger choice of building pieces or complete content expansions. Valheim L / XL
Large group More than ten players in one world - possible as soon as a server mod raises the limit. Valheim L / XL

A world grows with every hour you play - you can upgrade at any time, and your world and configuration are kept. Prices for every plan and a recommendation per setup are on What does a Valheim server cost?.

Everything your Valheim server can do

World around the clock

Your world runs permanently in the data center - anyone in the group can keep building without a particular computer being online.

World transfer

Bring your existing world: upload the .db and .fwl via web file manager or SFTP, enter the world name and carry on exactly where you left off.

Start a new world yourself

Change the world name in the settings, restart - and your fresh map is ready. Old world files stay in place, so you can switch back at any time.

Crossplay

PC, Xbox, PS5 and Switch 2 on one server - crossplay is enabled through the launch parameters, and players then connect with the join code.

Mods via BepInEx

From small quality-of-life plugins to large content mods: set up BepInEx as the server type with one click, upload your mods via FTP - bring server and players to the same versions, done.

Server type in one click

Vanilla, BepInEx or Valheim Plus - you switch yourself, without a ticket. World, world name, server name, password, crossplay and backup intervals are kept. Handy after an update: switching to Vanilla turns the mods off, switching back turns them on again.

World modifiers

Adjust combat, resources, death penalty and portal rules - anything from a relaxed building session to a brutal fight for survival.

Web file manager & SFTP

Full access to world files, configuration and mods - in the browser via the file manager or with an SFTP client.

Console & task scheduler

The server console runs live in your browser; schedule fixed restart times in the task scheduler so the world is saved reliably.

Automatic updates

After a Valheim update, your server is updated automatically - important, because client and server need the same version. Especially after big jumps like 1.0, that saves you half the troubleshooting.

DDoS protection

Our DDoS protection filters out attacks of up to 250 Gbit/s, so your Viking adventure does not end because of an attack.

Made in Germany

Your Valheim server runs in our data center near Frankfurt am Main - low latency for players across Europe.

100 % prepaid

No contract, no notice period: top up credit and renew for as long as you play. See all payment methods.

Provisioning

After you order, your Valheim server is ready in around 120 seconds - set a password, load your world and off to Valhalla.

Frequently asked questions - Valheim

In the unmodified game it is 10 players at the same time - a limit of Valheim itself, not of our plans. If you want more Vikings in one world, you raise the limit with a server mod; every player then needs that mod too. That is what the larger plans are for: L is designed for modded groups of around 20 players, XL for 30 and more. For vanilla groups, the plan is not decided by the player count but by the size of your world.

Yes. Since Valheim 1.0 there is crossplay across all platforms: PC (Steam and Microsoft Store), Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch 2 meet on the same server. One launch parameter decides this: if the server runs without crossplay, it uses the Steam backend - then only Steam players can see and join it, and console players will not find it at all. With crossplay enabled, players connect with the join code instead of the plain server address; you can find both in your web interface.

Yes. Your server is brought to the new version automatically after the update, and existing worlds are kept - Iron Gate confirms that old saves remain playable. One point matters, though: the game only generates the new Deep North biome in areas nobody has explored yet. In a world that has grown for a long time, the new content therefore only appears at the edge of the known map. For the full experience, Iron Gate recommends a fresh world - you start one yourself by changing the world name; the old world files stay in place.

Yes, and it is straightforward. Your world consists of two files: the .db with the world content and the .fwl with the metadata. Both are stored locally in the Valheim folder in your user documents and are uploaded to the server's world directory via the web file manager in your browser or via SFTP. Then you enter the world name in the launch parameters - done. Characters always stay locally on each player's computer.

Valheim mods almost always rely on BepInEx as their base. You do not have to upload the framework yourself: as soon as your server is ready, open Server type in the game server panel and switch to BepInEx with one click - your world, world name, server name, password, crossplay switch and backup intervals are kept. Then upload the mods you want via FTP; the mod files go into the plugins folder. If you would rather run a well-known all-in-one package than your own collection, choose the Valheim Plus server type instead. What matters is that all players use the same mods in the same version - otherwise connecting fails or the world runs into errors. Purely visual or comfort mods that only run on the client do not need a server installation. After a big game update, expect mods not to work at first: Iron Gate offers no official mod support and explicitly does not guarantee that mods keep working after a version change. The reliable way is to start the server unmodified first and add the mods back one by one once their authors have caught up.

Yes - simply switch the server type to Vanilla. No mods are loaded any more, and you do not have to delete anything. Switching back to BepInEx turns them on again. That is the usual approach after a Valheim update while mods have not caught up yet, and also the fastest way to find out whether a problem is caused by a mod. You switch with one click in the game server panel under Server type; your world and all settings are kept.

Yes, a server password is standard for Valheim: it must be at least five characters long and must not appear in the server name. That makes your world private automatically - only people who know the address or join code and the password can get in.

Yes, you do that yourself: you change the world name in your server settings. If you enter a name for which no world files exist yet, Valheim creates a fresh world automatically on the next start. The old files are kept - so you can go back any time by entering the original name again. Only one world runs at a time, since a Valheim server serves one world at once.

Yes. Valheim lets you adjust the rules with presets and individual modifiers - such as combat difficulty, resource rates, death penalty or portal restrictions. On a dedicated server, these values are set through the launch parameters, which you manage in the web interface.

Automatic backups are not part of the plan. Valheim does create its own copies of the world files when saving, but those are not a proper backup - the copies are stored on the same server. So download your .db and .fwl files regularly via SFTP or the web file manager, especially before bigger mod changes.

With hosting from inside the game, the world runs on one player's computer: when they are offline, the world is gone, and everyone else depends on their connection. A dedicated server runs around the clock in the data center - anyone can keep building at any time, ping is equally low for everyone, and nobody has to leave their PC on.

Valheim starts out modest but gets hungrier over time: every object you build and every area you explore ends up in the world file. A small plan is enough for a fresh vanilla world; for a world that has grown for a long time with large bases, or for an extensive mod collection, go one level higher. You can upgrade at any time.

After a successful order, our automated system activates your server in around 120 seconds. Upload your world or let a new one be generated, set a password, invite your friends - that is all it takes.
