Vanilla, TShock or tModLoader - which server variant?

Terraria can be hosted in three ways. You choose per server which variant is installed - and switch it later in the game server panel under Server type with one click, without a ticket and without waiting. One note up front: the new server type starts in an empty directory, so your world is lost in the process. The confirmation dialog says so clearly; download your .wld file first and upload it again afterwards.

Vanilla

The unmodified Terraria by Re-Logic. Perfect for classic co-op with friends - no extra software, just a shared world online around the clock.

TShock

The established server API for long-running community servers: permissions, anti-grief, region protection, warps, kits, bans and hundreds of plugins - moderated and grief-proof.

tModLoader

Modded Terraria for large content mods like Calamity, Thorium or Spirit. Add mods via the mod browser - the server and every player need the same version.

Difficulty & world size: choosing the right plan

Terraria is light on resources - what decides the RAM requirement is less the number of slots than the server variant, the world size and the difficulty you choose. Guidelines for sizing:

Mode / setup Recommended world size Recommended plan
Journey modeSmall - mediumTerraria S
Classic (co-op)Small - mediumTerraria S
ExpertMediumTerraria M
MasterMedium - largeTerraria M
TShock communityLargeTerraria M / L
tModLoader + QoL modsMedium - largeTerraria L
Calamity / large packsLargeTerraria L / XL

Guidelines for sizing: vanilla and TShock servers already run on the smaller plans, large tModLoader packs like Calamity need more RAM. If in doubt, choose one level bigger - you can upgrade at any time without losing data. Prices per plan are on What does a Terraria server cost?.

Joining, crossplay & configuration

Your Terraria server has a fixed address made of IP and port (default 7777). In the game, choose Multiplayer → Join via IP and enter IP and port - you can find both in our web interface at any time. You edit all settings like world name, difficulty, maximum players and port in serverconfig.txt via the config editor or via FTP/SFTP.

Terraria on mobile and desktop shares the same game content (version 1.4), so playing together on a vanilla or TShock server is possible in principle. Modded Terraria via tModLoader requires the PC/desktop version, because that is where the mods run.

Connect & configure

  • Fixed server address (IP:Port, default 7777)
  • Join via IP - straight from the game
  • serverconfig.txt in the config editor
  • Upload your own .wld world via FTP

Vanilla, TShock & tModLoader

Choose per server between classic vanilla, the TShock community framework or modded Terraria via tModLoader - you switch the server type yourself later with one click; back up your world first.

Mods & plugins

Large content mods like Calamity or Thorium via tModLoader, hundreds of TShock plugins for anti-grief, warps and kits - combine them freely.

Your own worlds

Upload your singleplayer world (.wld) via FTP and keep playing together - or generate a new world in small, medium or large.

Config editor

Adjust world name, difficulty (Classic, Expert, Master), port and slots comfortably in serverconfig.txt with the editor in the web interface.

Web file manager & SFTP

Full access to worlds, configs, TShock plugins and tModLoader mods - via the web file manager in your browser or with an SFTP client.

DDoS protection

Our DDoS protection filters attacks of up to 250 Gbit/s - so your server stays reachable even with larger communities.

Automatic updates

After every Terraria patch, your server updates itself automatically - no manual update needed, your server stays ready to play.

Sub-users & admins

Give friends and co-admins their own access to console, configs and restarts - without sharing your main password. Ideal for community teams.

Made in Germany

All Terraria servers run in our data center near Frankfurt - short routes to players across Europe for low ping.

Provisioning

Thanks to our automated ordering system, your Terraria server is ready in around 120 seconds - load your world, invite your friends, play.

24/7 support

Our support team helps around the clock, 365 days a year, via the ticket system - in English and German, with questions about TShock, tModLoader or the server configuration.

Frequently asked questions - Terraria

That depends on your goal. Vanilla is the unmodified Terraria and perfect for classic co-op with friends. TShock is a server API that adds admin rights, anti-grief, region protection, warps and server-side plugins - ideal for long-running community servers. tModLoader is the modified version for large content mods like Calamity or Thorium. Important: tModLoader mods must be installed in exactly the same version on the server and for every player. You choose the variant per server and change it yourself later: as soon as the server is ready, open Server type in the game server panel and switch with one click - no ticket, no waiting. For Terraria, the new server type starts in an empty directory: your world is lost, as the confirmation dialog explicitly points out. So download the .wld file via web file manager or SFTP first and upload it again after the switch.

Yes. For modded Terraria, choose the tModLoader variant. You add content mods like Calamity, Thorium, Spirit or quality-of-life packs via the built-in mod browser, or upload them via FTP/SFTP into the mod folder. So that everyone can join, every client needs the same tModLoader version and the same mods. Large packs like Calamity need more RAM - that is what the larger plans (L/XL) are for.

TShock is the established server framework for Terraria and extends the vanilla server with everything a community server needs: user accounts and permissions, anti-grief and region protection (so buildings are not destroyed), warps, kits, bans and hundreds of plugins. You upload plugins via FTP/SFTP into the plugin folder. That turns a simple co-op server into a long-running, moderated community server.

Terraria is set to 8 players by default, but the slot count can be raised considerably in serverconfig.txt. Since Terraria is fairly light on resources, the RAM requirement depends less on the pure player count than on the server variant and the world size: vanilla co-op runs on little RAM, while tModLoader with large mod packs like Calamity needs noticeably more. If in doubt, choose one plan bigger - you can upgrade at any time without losing data.

Terraria is one of the more modest games. A pure vanilla or TShock server gets by with little RAM, tModLoader with quality-of-life mods needs more, and large content mods like Calamity sit above that. The plan structure is a good guide: S/M are enough for vanilla and TShock, L/XL are meant for tModLoader and large mod packs. The exact RAM per plan is listed in the plan table.

Yes. Upload your .wld world file via the web file manager in your browser or with an SFTP client into the server's worlds directory and enter the world name in serverconfig.txt. That way you continue on the server exactly where your local progress left off. For tModLoader worlds, the server must run the same tModLoader version with the same mods.

Terraria on mobile and desktop shares the same game content (version 1.4), so playing together is possible in principle - a vanilla or TShock server that players join via IP and port is the right choice for that. tModLoader servers, on the other hand, are tied to the PC/desktop version, because that is where the mods run. Console versions of Terraria do not use freely hosted servers.

Yes. Via the web file manager in your browser or an SFTP client (for example FileZilla), you have full access to serverconfig.txt, world files, TShock plugins and tModLoader mods. That lets you upload your own worlds, back up your progress or edit settings like world name, difficulty, port (default 7777) and maximum players directly.

Automatic backups are not part of the plan - instead you have full control: you back up your world file (.wld) and configuration yourself at any time via SFTP or the web file manager in your browser, and restore them immediately when needed.

After a successful order, our automated system activates your Terraria server in around 120 seconds - load your world, invite your friends, play. You can upgrade to a bigger plan at any time later; world, plugins and configuration are fully kept.
