Install Hytale mods and pluginsFiles into the mods folder, restart, done - and what to do if the server will not start afterwards

Getting mods onto a Hytale server is easier than in most other games: there is no separate mod loader, no special server variant and usually nothing for your fellow players to install. The file goes into the mods folder, and the server restarts. This guide walks through the process and the four mistakes that most often make a mod installation fail.

How modding works in Hytale

Hytale relies on server-side modding. The content of a mod - new blocks, creatures, items or game mechanics - lives on the server and is delivered to the players when they connect. Your fellow players therefore usually do not have to download anything themselves. If you are coming from Minecraft, where the server and every single client need the same mod setup, this removes the most common source of errors.

Mods and plugins come as a .zip or .jar file. The official platform for them is CurseForge. Roughly speaking, there are two kinds: content packs that bring assets such as models, blocks or items, and plugins that add server logic - for example permission management, teleport points or custom game modes. On the server, both end up in the same folder.

Step by step

  1. Download the mod, for example from CurseForge. Pay attention to the supported Hytale version.
  2. Stop the server in the web interface.
  3. Upload the file into the mods folder in the server directory via the WebFTP file manager or SFTP. Do not unpack it - the .zip or .jar goes in exactly as it is.
  4. Start the server and keep an eye on the console until it has fully booted.
  5. Connect and check the new content.

With several mods, it is best not to upload them all at once, but one at a time or in small groups. If the server then no longer starts, you know immediately which file is to blame. Before the first big round of mods, a copy of the world is also worth it - how that works is in Create a backup.

Mistake 1: the same mod twice

The classic when updating: the new version of a mod is uploaded while the old one is still in the folder. The server then aborts the start, and the console shows a message like:

Failed to boot HytaleServer!
java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: Tried to load duplicate plugin

The fix is simple: look in the mods folder for two files of the same mod with different version numbers and delete the older one. When updating a mod, always remove the old file first, then upload the new one.

Mistake 2: missing dependencies

Many mods build on others - a library, a base plugin or a content pack. Which ones they are is listed on the mod's page, usually under "Dependencies" or in the description. If one of them is missing, the server starts with an error message or the mod simply does not work.

The fix: download all listed dependencies and put them in the mods folder together with the actual mod. Pay attention to matching versions - a dependency in a version that is too old can fail just like a missing one.

Mistake 3: mods that get in each other's way

Two mods that change the same game mechanic do not always get along. This does not necessarily show at startup, but often only in the game - with odd behavior, missing content or crashes during certain actions. Some authors list known conflicts on the mod page.

If the cause stays unclear, the only option is systematic elimination: take mods out of the folder one at a time, restart, test. The fastest way is the halving method - take out half of the mods, test, then keep searching in the suspicious half.

Mistake 4: the mod does not match the version

Hytale is in early access and is updated continuously. After a larger update, mod authors often need a few days to catch up. A mod that ran yesterday can prevent the server from starting after the update. Our servers are updated automatically so that players with the new client can keep connecting - but the mods only follow once you replace the files.

In that case, take the affected mod out of the folder for the time being and keep playing without it until a matching version is released. What else an update brings is covered in Update your Hytale server. If the server hangs completely afterwards, the checklist in Fix connection problems helps.

Mods and performance

Every mod brings content that stays in memory permanently, and some plugins keep working in the background all the time. You will hardly notice a handful of small mods, but a large collection with new creatures and world generation is clearly noticeable. If you want to mod a lot, choose one plan higher - which one fits which group is in How much does a Hytale server cost?.

Hypixel itself names a few plugins that are especially useful for server owners. One of them, Nitrado:PerformanceSaver, lowers the view distance automatically when the server comes under load. More on this lever is in Hytale server performance. If you use a permissions plugin, you will find the basics of granting rights in Become an admin.

Frequently asked questions

Download the mod as a .zip or .jar, stop the server, upload the file via WebFTP or SFTP into the mods folder in the server directory and restart the server. The file is not unpacked.

Usually not. Hytale relies on server-side modding, and the content is delivered by the server when players connect. That makes the first join take a little longer.

A mod is in the mods folder twice, usually an old and a new version. Delete the older file and restart the server.

Often a mod does not match the new version yet. Take mods out of the folder one at a time until the server starts again, and only put the affected mod back after its author has updated it.
