What is a VPS good for?

A VPS pays off wherever shared web hosting reaches its limits: as soon as you want to install your own software, keep services running permanently or decide on the system configuration yourself.

Websites and web applications

Your own web server with nginx or Apache, PHP in the version of your choice, MariaDB and a free SSL certificate from Let's Encrypt. Unlike shared hosting, you decide every setting yourself - from PHP limits to the caching strategy.

Docker and containers

Docker and Docker Compose run on our VPS. That lets you run several services cleanly separated side by side - for example Nextcloud, a database and a reverse proxy on the same server.

Self-managed game servers

From Minecraft and TeamSpeak to Steam-based servers: on a VPS you set up as many instances as you like and keep full control over startup parameters, mods and ports.

Your own cloud and file storage

Nextcloud on your own hardware in Germany instead of with a US provider: files, calendars and contacts live on your server, under your control and with your own encryption concept.

Voice server for your community

TeamSpeak 3 needs few resources and runs reliably even on the smallest plan. Your own VPS pays off as soon as you want to bundle several services or keep bots running permanently.

Bots, automation and AI workflows

Discord bots, cron jobs, scrapers or n8n workflows need one thing above all: a machine that keeps running. That is exactly what a VPS is the most affordable honest solution for.

LXC virtualization: what it means for you

Our VPS are based on LXC containers instead of full KVM machines. The technical difference is quickly explained: with LXC, all containers share the kernel of the host system instead of each booting a complete operating system with its own kernel. That means much less overhead - the same hardware delivers more usable performance per euro. That is exactly where our low entry price comes from.

We are also open about the limits. That is part of an honest buying decision:

Runs without issues

  • Docker and Docker Compose
  • nginx, Apache, PHP, MariaDB
  • Game servers and TeamSpeak
  • Nextcloud, n8n, bots, cron jobs
  • Your own firewall rules

Not possible by design

  • Your own kernel or kernel modules
  • Nested virtualization (your own VMs via KVM)
  • Windows Server as the operating system
  • Custom ISO installation

Would shared hosting be enough?

If all you need is a WordPress site, a few mailboxes and a domain, shared web hosting is simpler and cheaper - including Plesk, without you having to take care of updates and security.

A VPS is the right choice as soon as you want to install your own software, keep services running permanently or need root privileges.

Features in detail

100 % prepaid

You pay for your VPS entirely with prepaid credit - no contract term and no payment reminders. Top up when you need it and extend flexibly by 30, 90 or 360 days.

High performance

Dedicated vCPU cores, fast memory and NVMe storage on server-grade hardware - plenty of headroom for game servers, voice servers and demanding web applications.

NVMe SSDs

We use NVMe SSDs exclusively in our systems, mirrored in RAID 1. That gives your server a high data rate when reading and writing.

Unmetered traffic

1 Gbit/s uplink without a volume quota and without throttling after a certain number of terabytes. A fair use policy applies - normal operation never costs extra.

DDoS protection 250 Gbit/s

Every VPS sits behind our filtering system with a capacity of 250 Gbit/s. Attacks are caught before they reach your server - at no extra charge and without configuration.

Made in Germany

Our servers are located in a renowned data center near Frankfurt am Main. That means good ping and low latency for all kinds of applications across Europe.

Frequently asked questions about VPS

A VPS (virtual private server) is a standalone server system with root access, provided by virtualization on powerful host hardware. You get exclusively assigned memory, NVMe SSD storage and vCPU cores - including your own public IPv4 address. On a VPS you can run your own applications: websites, game servers (Minecraft, TeamSpeak, Discord bots), mail servers, database or development environments. Compared to shared web hosting, you have full control over the operating system, packages and configuration. At MainHoster.de you get your VPS in 120 seconds, with DDoS protection up to 250 Gbit/s and located in Frankfurt am Main.

Our VPS run on LXC container virtualization. The practical difference to KVM: with LXC, the containers share the kernel of the host system instead of each booting their own. That saves overhead - the same hardware delivers noticeably more usable performance per euro with LXC, and that is exactly why our entry price is so low. The trade-off: you cannot boot your own kernel or load your own kernel modules. For web servers, databases, game servers, voice servers, bots and Docker workloads that makes no difference. If you absolutely need your own kernel, your own kernel modules or nested virtualization, a KVM product is the better fit.

Yes. Nesting is enabled on our VPS, so Docker and Docker Compose run inside the container. You can pull images, build your own containers and run several services in parallel via a docker-compose.yml. As a rule of thumb for the plan: a single small container already runs on S, a typical stack of reverse proxy, application and database is well placed from M upwards. An LXC VPS is not intended for nested virtualization inside the container - such as your own VMs via KVM.

Traffic is unmetered under a fair use policy: there is no fixed volume quota, no throttling after a certain number of terabytes and no extra charges for normal operation. The uplink is 1 Gbit/s. In practice, fair use means that websites, game servers, voice servers, backups and downloads are covered to the usual extent. Only if a single server permanently saturates the line and thereby affects other customers will we get in touch with you - and look for a solution together instead of simply switching it off.

In principle, yes. You can set up your own VPN - such as WireGuard or OpenVPN - yourself in a few minutes with root access, for you, your family or your team. We only ask you to keep traffic usage fair: traffic is unmetered under a fair use policy, meaning without a fixed volume quota, but within the range of what other customers use on comparable plans. A VPN for everyday private or business use is easily covered. If, on the other hand, 100 GB run through the VPN in a few days just for downloads, that is well above what a comparable server otherwise uses - then we will get in touch and look for a solution together. Of course, the VPN must not be used for illegal purposes; our terms and conditions apply.

Automatic backups are not part of the plan - instead, with root access you have all the tools in your own hands. A common approach is a nightly cron job that pushes the relevant directories and database dumps to an external target with rsync, Borg or restic. One thing matters most: the backup does not belong on the same server. Keep at least one copy outside the VPS, for example on your own computer or a second storage target.

Every VPS includes its own public IPv4 address by default. We set up IPv6 on request - just open a ticket in the web interface and we will arrange the assignment for your server. For most use cases - web servers, game servers, voice servers, databases - the IPv4 address alone is completely sufficient.

No. Our VPS are pure Linux systems; Windows Server cannot be installed on them. Current Debian and Ubuntu versions as well as CentOS are available. If your application strictly requires Windows - such as certain .NET Framework software or a Windows-only business application - contact us via the ticket system so we can check together whether an alternative is an option.

Available are, among others: Linux Debian 11 (Bullseye), Linux Debian 12 (Bookworm), Linux Debian 13 (Trixie), Linux Ubuntu 22.04 (Jammy Jellyfish), Linux Ubuntu 24.04 (Noble Numbat), Linux Ubuntu 26.04, Linux Ubuntu 26.04 (with n8n) and Linux CentOS 9. You can trigger a reinstallation yourself in the web interface at any time; it only takes a few minutes. If the operating system you want is not available, feel free to contact us.

That depends on the use case. Guideline values: XS for a TeamSpeak 3 server with up to 32 slots, a simple website or a Discord bot. S for a small WordPress blog, vanilla Minecraft with 5-10 players or a Nextcloud instance. M for an online shop, modded Minecraft, a Docker stack or a small database application. L for a larger game server or several websites in parallel. XL for a development environment with Docker, several databases and high load. If in doubt, you can upgrade yourself at any time in the customer interface - if you have questions about choosing a plan, reach us by email, ticket system or live chat.

An upgrade to a more powerful VPS is possible at any time without data loss. You do the upgrade yourself in the customer interface - your VPS is then switched to the larger plan. Your system (operating system, installed software, configurations, data) is kept completely; only the assigned resources (RAM, CPU cores, NVMe storage) are increased. The IP address stays the same as well. Typical downtime during the upgrade: 5-15 minutes.

Neither. The VPS is paid in advance with credit and runs exactly as long as you extend it - by 30, 90 or 360 days. There is no contract you would have to cancel: if you don't extend, the service expires on the due date. That also means no payment reminders and no credit checks. Just remember to back up your data before it expires.

With prepaid hosting you top up credit on your customer account and use it to extend your services yourself - e.g. by 30, 90 or 360 days. There is no monthly invoice, no minimum term and no cancellation: if you don't extend, the service simply expires. Advantages: full cost control, no payment reminders, no accidental renewals, no credit check. At MainHoster.de this model applies to all VPS, web hosting, domains and game servers. Credit can be topped up via PayPal, bank transfer, credit card, Google Pay, Apple Pay or Paysafecard, for example.

NVMe (Non-Volatile Memory Express) is a modern storage protocol for SSDs that communicates directly over the PCIe interface - instead of the older SATA bus. In concrete terms: NVMe SSDs typically reach 3,000-7,000 MB/s sequential read speed, while SATA SSDs are limited to around 550 MB/s. For random IOPS, NVMe SSDs are up to 30× faster. For game servers, databases and websites with many small file accesses (e.g. WordPress), that means noticeably shorter loading times. All VPS and game servers at MainHoster.de run on NVMe SSDs.

Basic technical skills are enough. You should be able to connect via SSH and find your way around the command line - everything else can be learned step by step. Good to know: with root access, securing the system is your responsibility, not ours. Updates, firewall and strong credentials are your job. Our support is happy to help you along the way.

The MainHoster.de web interface contains information about your VPS and lets you manage basic functions easily and conveniently (restart, ordering, topping up credit etc.). You can reinstall your VPS yourself at any time with one of the available operating systems. If you can no longer reach the system via SSH, you can still access it directly via the VNC console.
