What is n8n?

n8n (pronounced "n-eight-n", short for nodemation) is an open-source workflow automation platform that connects apps, APIs, databases and AI models via drag and drop. With n8n you automate recurring tasks - for example syncing data between tools, processing incoming webhooks, sending emails, connecting OpenAI, Anthropic, Ollama or local LLMs, or building complete AI agents with memory, tools and external data sources.

n8n is a flexible alternative to Zapier, Make (formerly Integromat) and Power Automate - with the crucial difference that you host it yourself. Your data never leaves your server, you pay no per-execution fees and you are not held back by plan limits. More than 500 ready-made integrations (nodes) are available - Slack, Discord, Telegram, Google Sheets, Notion, Airtable, GitHub, Postgres, MySQL, MongoDB, S3, OpenAI, Anthropic, Hugging Face and many more. You write your own logic in JavaScript or Python right inside the workflow.

What is in the server template?

Our image Ubuntu 26.04 (with n8n) is a production-ready setup. There is nothing left to configure - everything is ready to use:

  • Ubuntu 26.04 LTS as a stable, long-term supported base
  • n8n in the current version, as a systemd service with autostart
  • Node.js in a matching LTS version
  • Reverse proxy (Nginx/Caddy) forwarding to the n8n port
  • HTTPS via Let’s Encrypt once your domain is connected
  • UFW firewall preconfigured (SSH, HTTP, HTTPS open)
  • Automatic security updates (unattended-upgrades) enabled
  • Full root access - install your own nodes, roll out updates

Which plan is right for n8n?

n8n runs reliably even on small plans - what matters for your choice is the number of parallel workflow executions, the complexity of your workflows and whether you run AI models directly on the server (which needs extra RAM).

Plan RAM Recommended for
VPS S 2 GB First workflows, tests & small automations (≈ 50 executions/day)
VPS M 4 GB Production workflows with several parallel executions, small AI agents
VPS L 8 GB Demanding setups with many parallel workflows, several databases and LLM calls
VPS XL 16 GB Self-hosting teams, large data volumes, RAG pipelines, embedding generation

You will find exact prices and all specifications on the VPS overview. Simply choose the image Ubuntu 26.04 (with n8n) when you order.

Typical use cases

AI agents

Build your own AI agents with OpenAI, Anthropic Claude, Mistral, Ollama or local LLMs. Connect them to vector stores (Pinecone, Qdrant, Supabase), give them tools and run them as a webhook, chatbot or cron job.

Data synchronization

Sync your CRM, ERP, spreadsheets, databases and SaaS tools automatically. A new lead in HubSpot lands in your internal Postgres right away - and triggers a Slack message.

Webhook processing

Receive webhooks from Stripe, GitHub, Shopify or Telegram, transform the data and pass it on. Ideal as a mini backend without a dedicated coding project.

Email automation

Read incoming email via IMAP, extract content with an LLM, classify it and trigger follow-up actions - for example creating tickets, drafting replies or writing data to databases.

Data pipelines

Pull data from APIs, transform it and write it to your database - nightly, hourly or event-driven. No Airflow, no complex ETL setup.

Data privacy

Your workflows, credentials and data stay on your server in Germany - GDPR-compliant, without depending on third parties. You can process sensitive data, too.

Frequently asked questions - n8n hosting

n8n is an open-source workflow automation platform that lets you connect apps, APIs, databases and AI models via drag and drop. Typical uses are automating recurring tasks, connecting several SaaS tools, processing webhooks and building AI agents with tools, memory and external data sources. n8n is considered the self-hosted alternative to Zapier, Make (Integromat) and Microsoft Power Automate.

The image Ubuntu 26.04 (with n8n) includes: Ubuntu 26.04 LTS, n8n in the current version as a systemd service with autostart, Node.js in a matching LTS version, a preconfigured reverse proxy forwarding to the n8n port, HTTPS preparation via Let’s Encrypt, a preconfigured UFW firewall and automatic security updates. After ordering, you open n8n directly in your browser - no further installation needed.

Your VPS with the n8n template is provisioned in about 120 seconds. You get the access details in the web interface, open the IP address (or your domain) in your browser and can sign up or log in right away. No further installation steps are needed.

Plan S (2 GB RAM) is enough for first workflows and tests. Production workflows with several parallel executions or small AI agents run more reliably on M (4 GB RAM). For demanding setups with many parallel workflows, several databases or lots of LLM calls, we recommend L (8 GB RAM). If you run local LLMs via Ollama or generate embeddings yourself, XL (16 GB RAM) or larger pays off. You can upgrade at any time without losing data.

Yes. The server is prepared for HTTPS via Let’s Encrypt. You point an A record of your domain to the server’s IP address, trigger certificate creation - and n8n runs under your own domain with a valid SSL certificate. You can register a domain directly with MainHoster.de.

Yes. Your server is located in our data center in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. Workflows, credentials and processed data stay on your server under your control - without third parties. A data processing agreement (DPA) under the GDPR is available on request.

Yes. You have full root access to the server. n8n can be updated to a newer version at any time via npm or the systemd service. If you prefer Docker, you can use the template as a starting point and switch to a Docker-based installation.

With n8n Cloud you pay per execution or for plans with limits; your data runs through the provider’s cloud infrastructure. With self-hosted n8n on a MainHoster VPS, there is no execution limit, you pay a fixed prepaid plan price, your data stays in Germany and you can install your own nodes and run local LLMs (for example via Ollama) right on the server.

There is no artificial limit - only the hardware limits of the plan you choose. Plan S (2 GB RAM) handles dozens of small workflows; M and L comfortably process several hundred executions per day. For very many simultaneous executions, we recommend larger plans or queue mode (worker setup) with Redis.

Yes. Workflows are stored in n8n’s local SQLite database (~/.n8n); you can back it up via cron, push it to a Git repository or use n8n’s built-in Git versioning. For larger setups, we recommend switching to Postgres with regular pg_dump runs.
