First: who is affected?
The most important question is asked too rarely: can nobody get onto the server, or only individual players? The answer cuts the search in half right away.
- Nobody gets in: the cause is on the server side - it is not running, has not finished starting, is stuck at account linking or on a mod.
- Individual players cannot get in: the cause is on their side - wrong address, outdated client, missing whitelist entry or a restrictive network.

Step 1: check the address and port
By far the most common reason for "Failed to connect": the port is missing from the address or is wrong. With us, several servers share one IP, and they are told apart by the port. Without it - or with the Hytale default port 5520 from a generic guide - the connection lands on a port your server is not listening on.
The fix: copy the full address in the form IP:Port from the web interface instead of typing it. If you have saved the server as an entry in your server list, check there as well that the port is included. The whole process is in Join a Hytale server.
Step 2: is the server really running?
For a Hytale server, "started" does not yet mean "ready". A look at the console in the web interface shows the actual state:
- Waiting for account linking. On the very first start, a link and a code appear in the console. Only after you have confirmed both with your Hytale account does the server start fully. Until then, every join attempt fails.
- Still loading. Especially with many mods or a large world, the start takes a moment. Wait until the console reports that the server is ready.
- Has crashed. If the console output ends with an error message, the server is not running at all. The most common cause is mods, see step 5.
On freshly created servers, a first join can occasionally fail even though the server is running. Restarting the server and the game solves this in most cases.
Step 3: do the versions match?
Hytale only allows connections when client and server use exactly the same protocol version. If the problem appears shortly after a Hytale update, that is the most likely cause:
- The server has not caught up yet: we apply updates automatically, but there can be a short window between the new client and the updated server. Wait a little and try again.
- The client has not been updated yet: restart the launcher so that it installs the update.
- Pre-release version in the launcher: anyone who has switched to a pre-release channel plays a different version from the server.
More on this in Update your Hytale server.
Step 4: whitelist, password, ban
If the whitelist is active, anyone who is not listed is turned away - to the person affected, this often looks like a technical problem. Check whether the whitelist is on and whether the player has been approved with the right account. /help whitelist shows the matching commands for your version. Also possible: a wrong password or an accidental entry in bans.json.
A typical stumbling block: the player is only listed in the old whitelist.json, which no longer applies since Update 6. How to maintain the whitelist reliably is explained in Make your server private.
Step 5: mods as the cause
If the server does not start at all or crashes when someone joins, a mod is often to blame. The console usually names the affected file in the error message. The most common cases:
- Duplicate mod - recognizable by "Tried to load duplicate plugin". Delete the older file from the
modsfolder. - Missing dependency - upload the additional mods named on the mod page as well.
- The mod does not match the version - remove it for the time being until the author catches up.
If you cannot narrow down the cause, take all mods out of the folder and test whether the server starts without them. Then put them back step by step. Details in Install mods and plugins.
Step 6: the player's network
Hytale connects via the QUIC protocol over UDP. At home, you do not have to open anything for it, and according to Hypixel, mobile networks with carrier-grade NAT usually work too. Things can look different on company, school or dorm networks that block UDP traffic on unusual ports. A quick test: connect via your phone's hotspot. If it works there, the block is in the original network.
A firewall or a VPN on your own computer can also get in the way. More on how address, port and firewall work together is in Ports and firewall.
Connected, but it stutters
If everyone gets in but the game stutters, it is usually not a connection problem but a performance problem. With /ping, you check the latency: if it is low and things still stutter, the server is working at its limit. The most common cause in Hytale is a high view distance, followed by many simultaneously active players and creatures. How to counter it is explained in Hytale server performance.
