resources & server.cfg: how your server comes together

At its core, a FiveM server is a collection of resources - each resource is a folder in the resources directory. A job script, a vehicle pack, an interior (MLO), a HUD: everything goes there and is started in server.cfg with an ensure line.

The order in the configuration helps decide whether your server boots cleanly: first the database connector, then the framework, then everything built on top of it. If a dependency is missing or listed too low, the console reports it right at startup - and you always have the console in view in the web interface.

You upload files via the web file manager in your browser or with an SFTP client. You edit server.cfg directly in the config editor, without downloading it first.

Two more settings are not in the file but in your server settings: the player count and the FXServer build. For the build you choose between the version recommended by Cfx.re, the latest build and a fixed build number - important when your framework is tuned to a specific version. The chosen build arrives on the server as soon as the server files are fetched again; back up your resources and the database first.

If you prefer a panel over a config file, enable txAdmin in the server settings. Then the official FXServer panel takes over and you manage restarts, players and resources in the browser. You cannot run both at once - either server.cfg runs the server directly, or txAdmin does it for you.

One thing you bring yourself: the Cfx.re license key. You request it for free in the Cfx.re Portal and enter it under sv_licenseKey - so the key belongs to you and stays with you, wherever your server runs.

What goes into server.cfg

  • sv_licenseKey - your Cfx.re key
  • sv_hostname - name in the server list
  • sv_maxclients - your player count
  • ensure - every active resource
  • Database connection (oxmysql)
  • ACE permissions for your admin team

MySQL database included - the foundation for ESX and QBCore

As soon as a freeroam server turns into a roleplay server, there is no way around a database: characters, inventories, vehicles, properties, jobs and bank accounts have to survive a restart. That is why your FiveM server comes with a MySQL/MariaDB database - you do not have to book one elsewhere.

Ready to use

Database and credentials are ready. You enter them once in server.cfg for the database connector - done.

phpMyAdmin in the panel

View tables, import your framework's .sql files, fix records and export - all in the browser, straight from our game server panel.

Easy migration

Coming from another host? Import your SQL export and upload the resources folder - your server keeps running as before.

You manage the database with phpMyAdmin right in our game server panel. Back up your data there yourself as an SQL export whenever you like - especially before bigger script updates, a better habit than relying on any automation.

Which plan fits which server?

From a drift meetup with friends to a serious RP project with a whitelist: the performance you need depends less on the player count than on the amount and quality of your scripts. Guidelines for choosing a plan:

Setup Description Recommended plan
Standalone / freeroamNo framework: a few individual resources for racing, drifting or free driving.FiveM S
ESXThe classic roleplay framework - jobs, inventory and economy with a huge selection of scripts.FiveM M / L
QBCoreModern RP framework with a clean structure, an active community and many ready-made modules.FiveM M / L
Serious RPWhitelisted server with extensive jobs, custom cars, MLOs and many players around the clock.FiveM L / XL

If in doubt, choose one level bigger: custom vehicles, MLOs and elaborate HUDs permanently cost memory, and upgrading in the middle of live operation is possible but unnecessary stress. Prices per plan are on What does a FiveM server cost?.

Everything your FiveM server can do

MySQL database

Included in every plan: the database for ESX, QBCore and all database-backed scripts - including credentials for the connector in your server.cfg.

phpMyAdmin

Manage your database with phpMyAdmin straight from our game server panel: browse tables, import SQL files, export data - no extra software.

Full file access

Upload resources, scripts, vehicles and MLOs via the web file manager in your browser or via SFTP - no detour through a limited menu.

Config editor

Edit server.cfg directly in the web interface: server name, player count, ensure lines, ACE permissions and database connection in one place.

Live console

The server console runs live in your browser: startup errors, missing dependencies and script warnings show up right away instead of only in the log.

Permissions & sub-users

In the game you manage admin rights via the ACE system; in the web interface you give your team targeted access to the server via sub-users.

Task scheduler

Schedule fixed restart times in the web interface - with large script collections, the easiest way to keep performance clean for good.

Choice of FXServer build

You decide which build your server runs: the version recommended by Cfx.re, the latest build or a fixed build number your scripts are tuned to.

txAdmin at the push of a button

You enable the official FXServer panel yourself in the server settings: scheduled restarts with announcements, player management, admin accounts with Discord login and deployer recipes for ESX or QBCore.

DDoS protection

Our DDoS protection filters attacks of up to 250 Gbit/s - for public roleplay servers with a loyal community, unfortunately not a theoretical issue.

Made in Germany

Your FiveM server runs in our data center near Frankfurt am Main - short routes to players across Europe and low ping.

Fixed server address

Your server has a fixed address made of IP and port, which you find in the web interface. Enter it in the FiveM client or share it with your community.

100 % prepaid

No contract, no notice period: you top up credit and renew for as long as your project runs. See all payment methods.

Provisioning

After you order, your FiveM server is ready in around 120 seconds - upload resources, adjust server.cfg, go.

Frequently asked questions - FiveM

Every player needs a legal copy of Grand Theft Auto V - whether via Steam, the Rockstar Games Launcher or Epic - plus the free FiveM client. FiveM is PC only: players on PlayStation or Xbox cannot join a FiveM server. To connect, you enter your server's fixed address made of IP and port in the FiveM client.

Yes - and you request it yourself. Cfx.re issues license keys for free via the Cfx.re Portal (portal.cfx.re); you create a key for your server there with your Cfx.re account and then enter it in server.cfg under sv_licenseKey. The key therefore belongs to you and moves with you if you ever run your server somewhere else.

Yes, in every plan. Your FiveM server comes with a MySQL/MariaDB database - exactly what you need once a roleplay framework like ESX or QBCore comes into play: characters, vehicles, inventories, jobs and bank accounts are stored there. You enter the credentials in server.cfg in the connection string of the database connector (usually oxmysql).

Yes, and you switch it on yourself: in your server settings you enable txAdmin, the official web panel for FXServer. From then on, server.cfg no longer runs the server directly - txAdmin takes over. On first access you create an admin account there and choose whether to keep using your existing server.cfg or set up a new server from a recipe. You reach the panel in the browser via your server's second port address, which is shown in the web interface. If you prefer the classic way with server.cfg and the console, simply leave txAdmin off.

Mainly everyday convenience: scheduled restarts with in-game announcements, a player list with kick, warn and ban including history, admin accounts with graded permissions and Discord login, an editor for server.cfg, an overview of your resources and performance charts. The deployer recipes are handy for getting started: with them you set up a complete ESX or QBCore server including the database import in a few minutes, instead of configuring every resource one by one.

Via phpMyAdmin, straight from our game server panel. It lets you see tables and contents in the browser, import your framework's .sql files, fix individual records and export your database as a backup - without any extra program on your own computer.

Resources are simply folders in your server's resources directory. You upload them via the web file manager in your browser or via SFTP and then enable them in server.cfg with an ensure line. Order matters: framework and dependencies first, then the scripts built on top of them. After a restart, the resource is active.

server.cfg is the central configuration file: server name (sv_hostname), player count (sv_maxclients), tags and description for the server list, the database connection, admin permissions via the ACE system and all ensure lines of your resources. You can edit it directly in the config editor of our web interface or via FTP.

You set the player count yourself - either in your server settings or via sv_maxclients in server.cfg. We do not sell slots; the figures in the plans are recommendations. In practice, what matters is not the number in the configuration but what your server has to carry alongside: a serious RP server with a large framework, many jobs, custom vehicles and MLOs needs considerably more performance per player than a simple freeroam server.

You decide. In your server settings you choose between the version recommended by Cfx.re, the latest build or a fixed build number - the latter is handy when your framework or individual scripts are tuned to a specific version. Unlike games distributed via Steam, FiveM does not update by itself: your server stays on the chosen build until you fetch the server files again. Back up resources, configuration and database first - a good habit anyway.

Yes. You upload your complete resources folder including server.cfg via web file manager or SFTP and import the database as an SQL export. Then you only adjust the database connection details in server.cfg - your server keeps running as before.

FiveM handles permissions via the ACE system in server.cfg: you create groups, assign permissions to them and assign players via their identifiers (Steam, Discord or license ID). Many frameworks also bring their own admin menus built on the same groups.

Automatic backups are not part of the plan - you stay in control: you back up resources and configuration yourself at any time via SFTP or the web file manager, and the database via SQL export. Especially before bigger script updates, your own backup is the better habit anyway.

Yes, your FiveM server runs continuously - whether or not you are online yourself. With the task scheduler in the web interface you can also set fixed restart times, which keeps performance clean with large script collections.

After a successful order, our automated system activates your server in around 120 seconds. You can upgrade to a bigger plan at any time later; resources, configuration and database are kept.
