Force wipe & wipe cycle: the rhythm of your server

On the first Thursday of every month, Facepunch Studios releases the big Rust update - the force wipe. Because the network protocol and map generation change, every Rust server has to wipe its map that day; old saves are no longer compatible. With us, the map wipe is a 1-click reinstall in the web interface.

In addition to the map wipe, you decide on the BP wipe (blueprints) yourself. Common rhythms for community servers:

  • Monthly - only at force wipe. Calm building, large bases, lasting progress.
  • Bi-weekly - a popular middle ground: a fresh start without progress vanishing too fast.
  • Weekly - high pace, ideal for 2x/5x servers and active PvP communities.

Map wipe, BP wipe or both: you define the files to delete in the panel and the server does the rest - with a new seed, unless you have set a fixed one.

Wipes at a glance

  • Force wipe: 1st Thursday of the month
  • Map wipe via 1-click reinstall
  • BP wipe whenever you choose
  • New seed or fixed seed

Oxide / uMod or Carbon - which modding framework?

In Rust, plugins run on a modding framework. We support both major options - you choose per server which one is installed:

Oxide / uMod

The established framework with the largest plugin catalog (via uMod / umod.org). Nearly every Rust plugin is built for Oxide. Important: with the monthly force wipe update, the Oxide extension is overwritten by the game update and has to be updated to the new version - only then do the plugins run again.

Carbon

The more modern framework, focused on performance and fast update availability. Carbon loads existing Oxide/uMod plugins through a compatibility layer and is usually ready again sooner after the force wipe - handy when your server should be up on wipe day right away.

Server types: from vanilla to zerg

Rust thrives on variety. With gather multipliers, team limits and plugins, you define the character of your server - from a pure vanilla experience to a high-scale clan server. Guidelines for choosing a plan:

Server type Description Recommended plan
VanillaOriginal gather rates without plugins, as Facepunch intended.Rust S / M
2x / 3x / 5x / 10xIncreased gather and craft rates for faster progress.Rust M / L
PvENo player damage, focus on building, farming and cooperation.Rust S / M
Solo / duo / trioEnforced team limit - no teaming beyond the group size.Rust M / L
BattlefieldInstant loadout, constant PvP, no classic farming.Rust M / L
HardcoreReduced map, no teleport or craft level 1, focus on melee & bow.Rust S / M
Zerg / clanLarge groups allowed, high player count, many entities on the map.Rust L / XL

Guidelines for sizing - what counts is map size (worldsize), entity count and plugin load. Modded servers with many plugins and large maps need more RAM than pure vanilla servers. Prices per plan and a recommendation per map size are on What does a Rust server cost?.

worldsize, seed & RustMaps: your map, your design

Every procedural Rust map is created from two values: server.worldsize sets the map size (typically 3000-4500) and server.seed the specific map, which is always generated the same way. You set both in server.cfg or in the launch parameters.

On RustMaps.com you can preview a combination of seed and size in advance - including monuments, islands and rivers - and pick a map that suits your play style. If you prefer a hand-made map, you add a custom map via URL or FTP.

Configure your map

  • server.worldsize - size (3000-4500)
  • server.seed - fixed procedural map
  • Preview on RustMaps.com
  • Custom map via levelurl or FTP

Popular Oxide & Carbon plugins

Plugins turn a vanilla server into a world of its own - from ranks and kits to clan systems and a live map. A selection of widely used plugins that run on Oxide/uMod and (through compatibility) on Carbon:

Kits
Starter and rank kits with items, building materials and cooldowns.
Clans
Clan system with tags, friendly fire protection and chat.
ZLevels
Gathering skill system - higher levels yield more resources.
BetterLoot
Configurable loot tables for crates and barrels.
Vanish
Invisible admin mode for moderating without being seen.
AdminRadar
Admin overlay - players, bases and loot at a glance.
Rust:IO
Live map of the server in the browser, including player positions.

You upload plugins via FTP/SFTP into the plugin folder or install them through the web interface.

Oxide & Carbon

Extend your Rust server with plugins via Oxide/uMod or Carbon - from kits and clans to event systems, anything is possible.

1-click wipe

Define your wipe types (map wipe, BP wipe) directly in the web interface. Wipes then run with one click - in time for the monthly force wipe.

High performance

Fast CPUs with high single-thread performance and NVMe SSDs keep FPS stable - even on large maps with many entities.

Web file manager & SFTP

Full access to server.cfg, the identity folder and plugins - via the web file manager in your browser or with an SFTP client. Upload custom maps, back up your save, edit configs.

RCON & BattleMetrics

WebRCON access for RustAdmin, the Facepunch WebRcon console or BattleMetrics - kick, ban, broadcast and config changes at runtime.

Rust+ app

Pair your server with the Rust+ companion app: team chat, live map and smart alarms straight from your phone - once the app port is reachable, you are set.

DDoS protection

Our DDoS protection filters attacks of up to 250 Gbit/s - especially important for popular PvP servers and on a busy wipe day.

Automatic updates

After every Facepunch patch, your Rust server updates itself automatically - no manual SteamCMD update (app ID 258550) needed.

Sub-users & admins

Give co-admins their own rights via ownerid/moderatorid and sub-user accounts - without sharing your main password. Ideal for clans and community teams.

Made in Germany

Your Rust servers run in a data center near Frankfurt - central in the EU for low ping, even on a busy wipe day.

Provisioning

Our automated system activates your Rust server in around 120 seconds - ready to play for the next wipe.

Task scheduler & automation

Schedule automatic restarts, recurring wipes and console commands directly in the web interface - your Rust server runs largely without manual intervention.

Rent a Rust server or host it yourself?

In principle, you can set up a Rust dedicated server yourself via SteamCMD (Steam app ID 258550) on a home PC or your own server. In practice this often fails because of 24/7 availability, DDoS attacks on PvP servers and the effort for updates, ports and wipe automation. A rented server takes exactly that off your hands - and you still control everything yourself in the web interface, without depending on support.

Aspect Self-hosting (home PC / own server) Renting at MainHoster.de
AvailabilityOnly while your computer runs; uses resources in the background24/7 in the data center, independent of your PC

Wipes & updatesRedo everything yourself after every force wipeAutomatic updates, 1-click wipe & task scheduler

For most communities, a rented Rust server is cheaper and more reliable than running your own hardware around the clock - and with the web interface you keep full control. Answers to the most common setup questions are in our FAQ below.

Frequently asked questions - Rust

In Rust, the RAM requirement is driven mainly by the map size (worldsize) and the number of entities (bases, plugins) - not by the player count alone. The comparison table above shows the recommended player count and map size for each plan, from small maps on plan S to mega servers and events on plan XL. If in doubt, choose one level bigger - you can upgrade at any time without losing data.

Facepunch Studios releases the big Rust update on the first Thursday of every month - the so-called force wipe. Because of the protocol and map changes, every server has to wipe its map that day; old saves are no longer compatible. With us, the map wipe is a 1-click reinstall. Whether you also reset blueprints (BP wipe) is up to you.

Yes. You can choose between Oxide/uMod and Carbon and install plugins directly via FTP/SFTP or the web interface. Important: with the monthly force wipe update, the Oxide extension is overwritten by the game update and has to be updated to the new version - only then do the plugins run again. Carbon is usually update-compatible again sooner and loads Oxide/uMod plugins through a compatibility layer.

In the web interface you define which files are deleted, which determines the wipe type (map wipe, BP wipe or both). The server then performs the wipe when you click reinstall - including a new map seed, unless you have set a fixed one.

Yes. server.worldsize (typically 3000-4500) controls the map size and server.seed the specific procedural map. You enter both values in server.cfg or the launch parameters. On RustMaps.com you can preview a combination of seed and size before setting it on the server.

Yes. You add custom maps via a URL (levelurl) or upload the .map file via FTP/SFTP. Hand-made maps or custom maps generated on RustMaps run just like procedural maps.

Automatic backups are not part of the plan - instead you have full control: you back up your save (the server identity folder with .map and .sav files) yourself at any time via SFTP or the web file manager in your browser, and restore it immediately when needed.

Yes. Via the web file manager in your browser or an SFTP client (for example FileZilla), you have full access to server.cfg, the identity folder, Oxide/Carbon plugins and configs. That lets you upload custom maps, back up your save or edit plugin settings directly.

Yes. Rust uses WebRCON - you connect with RCON IP, port and password through tools like RustAdmin, the Facepunch WebRcon console or BattleMetrics, and control the server at runtime (kick, ban, broadcast, config). You can find the RCON credentials in the web interface.

Yes. Rust+ works as soon as the app port is reachable (app.port, 28082 by default) and app.publicip points to the server IP. Then you pair the server in the Rust+ app via the in-game menu and use team chat, map and smart alarms from your phone.

Our automated system activates your Rust server in around 120 seconds after you order - ready to play for the next wipe. You can upgrade to a bigger plan at any time later; world, plugins and configuration are fully kept.
