Good to know

  • One price, no teaser offer. The amount shown is the annual price - there is no reduced first-year price that multiplies in the second year. Running discount campaigns are shown as a struck-through price.
  • No automatic renewal. Prepaid means: no charge without your action, but no silent renewal either. You extend the term yourself in the web interface - ideally with a reminder a few weeks before.
  • Restoring after expiry. When a domain expires, depending on the extension a grace period follows and then the redemption period, during which the registry charges a considerably higher fee for restoring it.

Your own domain in three steps

1. Choose a name

Your preferred name plus a matching extension. Short, easy to say and without digits that get mixed up. For a German audience .de is the obvious choice, for an international one .com or .eu.

2. Enter the registrant

You are entered as the registrant yourself - the domain belongs to you, regardless of who manages it. For companies, the full company name including the legal form belongs in the registrant field.

3. Wait for activation

Thanks to prepaid billing, activation runs automatically - as a rule, the domain can be set up after around 300 seconds.

Already have a domain somewhere else?

Transferring it to us costs nothing - all you need is the auth code (EPP code) from your current provider. If you create the DNS records with us beforehand, your site stays reachable throughout the transfer.

What comes with every domain

Transfer-in

Do you own a domain with another provider? Transfer it to us easily and at no extra cost - all you need is the auth code.

Name servers

Every domain comes with 4 redundant name servers free of charge. If one fails, the others answer - keeping your domain reachable.

Provisioning

Thanks to prepaid billing, the domain is activated automatically. As a rule, it can be set up after 300 seconds.

DNS management

You set A, AAAA, CNAME, MX, TXT, PTR and SRV records yourself in the web interface - including as many subdomains as you like, at no extra charge.

Prepaid

Billing via credit: no contract, no automatic renewal, no payment reminders. You extend the term yourself in the web interface.

Registrant data

You manage the registrant and admin contact yourself. You are the one entered - the domain belongs to you, not to us.

What you can do with your domain

Run a website

The domain points to your storage via an A record. For most projects, web hosting with Plesk and one-click WordPress is enough; if you need root access, choose a VPS.

Email under your own name

Addresses like contact@yourcompany.com run via the MX record. To make sure the mail actually arrives, SPF, DKIM and DMARC belong with it - you set all of them yourself in the DNS management.

Make game servers easy to reach

Instead of IP and port, your friends only need mc.yourcompany.com. An SRV record makes that possible - a good match for our game servers.

Secure a name and redirect

A domain doesn't need hosting. You can also just secure a name, catch typo variants or redirect them to your main address with a 301.

Domain terms explained briefly

Registry
Operator of a top-level domain and keeper of the central database. For .de, this is DENIC eG in Frankfurt am Main.
Registrar
The provider through which you register and which is technically connected to the registry - usually via EPP.
Registrant
The domain holder. The legal and economic owner of the domain.
Auth code / EPP code
Authorisation password for a change of provider. It is requested from the current provider and is only valid for a limited time.
KK-Antrag
Konnektivitätskoordination - the German term for a provider change of a .de domain.
Transfer lock
A lock against unintended provider changes. It must be released at the current provider before a transfer.
Name server
The servers that answer DNS queries for a domain. With us, 4 redundant name servers per domain are included.
TTL
Time to live - how long resolvers may cache a DNS answer. The reason why changes don't take effect immediately.
MX record
The DNS record that tells sending mail servers who accepts mail for the domain.
SRV record
A DNS record that publishes the port of a service in addition to the target - for example for Minecraft or TeamSpeak.
DNSSEC
Cryptographic signing of DNS answers against manipulation in transit. Whether an extension supports DNSSEC is decided by the respective registry.
WHOIS / RDAP
Lookup services for registration data. Since the GDPR, personal details there are largely redacted.
IDN / Punycode
Domains with umlauts and special characters. The DNS internally translates them into an ASCII form with the prefix xn--.
Redemption period
The period after a domain expires during which it can only be restored for an increased registry fee.

Frequently asked questions

A domain (e.g. mainhoster.de) is a human-readable name that the Domain Name System (DNS) maps to an IP address. Instead of typing an IP address such as 185.119.117.42 into the browser, you use the memorable name. A domain consists of several parts: the top-level domain (TLD, e.g. .de, .com, .org) and the freely chosen domain name in front of it. Your own domain is the basis for professional websites, your own email addresses (name@yourdomain.com), brand presence and SEO - search engines rate your own domains higher than subdomains of third-party providers.

You choose the domain in the ordering process, enter the registrant details and complete the order. The amount is deducted from your prepaid credit. Activation then runs automatically: as a rule, the domain can be set up after around 300 seconds.

A .de domain costs €5.84 per year at MainHoster.de. The prices of the other extensions are listed in the price table on this page. All prices are per year and are deducted from your prepaid credit.

No. The prepaid model has no automatic renewal, no contract and no payment reminders. You extend the term yourself in the web interface. Set yourself a reminder in good time before expiry so the domain isn't deactivated.

Currently .de, .com, .net, .org, .info, .biz, .eu, .at and .ch. The current annual prices are listed in the price table on this page.

To transfer the domain, you need the auth code - depending on the provider also called EPP code or auth info. You can request it from your current provider. With the auth code, you transfer the domain to MainHoster.de via our domain ordering process. The transfer-in is free; you only pay the regular annual price of the extension.

No, if you create the DNS records with us before the transfer. Only the registrar changes during the move; as long as the zone contains the same values as with the previous provider, the domain stays reachable throughout.

You can choose from a large number of resource records. Available are, among others: A, AAAA, CNAME, MX, TXT, PTR and SRV (e.g. for Minecraft or TeamSpeak). You set them yourself in the web interface at any time.

That depends on the TTL of the previous record - typically between a few minutes and 24 hours. A complete name server change additionally runs via the registry of the extension and can take up to 24 hours. If you are planning a change, lower the TTL in good time beforehand.

Subdomains such as shop.yourdomain.com cost nothing and are unlimited. They are not registered with a registry, but only created as a DNS record in your zone - you do that yourself in the web interface.

No. A domain can also be registered on its own, for example to secure a name or set up a redirect. If a website is to run behind it, you additionally need storage space - web hosting or a VPS.

The registrant is the legal and economic owner of the domain. They can transfer, assign or delete it. The admin contact is the administrative contact person who may make administrative decisions on behalf of the registrant. For .de domains, DENIC abolished the admin contact role on 25 May 2018; for .com, .net, .org and many other extensions it still exists.

No. Since 2018, registrants of a .de domain without a residence or registered office in Germany only have to name an authorised recipient with a German address to DENIC within two weeks if requested. Beyond that, a residence requirement only exists for .eu, which requires a residence or registered office in the EU or EU citizenship.

Since the GDPR, only to a very limited extent. DENIC only publishes technical data and the status of a .de domain. For generic extensions, personal fields are usually redacted or replaced by an anonymised contact form.

None. Our web interface guides you through the settings of your domain, and our support team helps with any problems - in German and English.
