Setting up Steam Workshop mods & BattlEye correctly

DayZ does not sync Workshop mods to the server automatically - you install them by hand and keep full control. Here is how it works:

  • Upload the mod folders via web file manager or SFTP and enable them with the -mod= launch parameter.
  • Copy each mod's .bikey files from its keys folder into the server's keys directory.
  • BattlEye checks these keys - if one is missing, players get a signature mismatch kick.
  • Many mods require the Community Framework (CF) as a common base.

So that legitimate mod scripts are not blocked by mistake, you can adjust the BattlEye filters (for example scripts.txt) when needed. All files are accessible via FTP/SFTP.

Mods at a glance

  • Manual installation, full control
  • Enabled via the -mod= launch parameter
  • .bikey into the keys folder
  • CF as the base for Expansion & traders

Central Economy: loot & spawns by your rules

The Central Economy (CE) is the heart of every DayZ server - it controls which items appear, how often and where. Through the mission files you tailor the loot exactly to your server type, from hardcore-scarce to loot-rich:

types.xml

Quantities, respawn times and lifetime per item. The central tool for making loot rarer or more common.

events.xml

Dynamic events like vehicle spawns, animals and groups of infected - frequency and position are configurable.

cfgspawnabletypes.xml

Attachments and random contents when items spawn - such as ammunition in weapons or items in containers.

All Central Economy files are in the mission folder and can be edited freely via web file manager or SFTP. The rest of the server configuration - name, slots, map, day/night cycle - is set separately in serverDZ.cfg.

Server types: from vanilla hardcore to Expansion

DayZ thrives on the range of its community servers. With mods, loot settings and PvP rules you define the character of your server. Guidelines for choosing a plan:

Server type Description Recommended plan
VanillaPure DayZ survival without mods - hardcore loot and the Central Economy as Bohemia intended.DayZ S / M
Vanilla+ / QoLLight comfort mods - map, status indicators, balance without traders and without a big overhaul.DayZ M
PvE / traderNo or reduced PvP, trading system, base building - cooperative survival with an economy.DayZ M / L
ExpansionDayZ Expansion with vehicles, base building, missions and market - a large mod setup based on CF.DayZ L / XL
Hardcore / NamalskSurvival with a weather system and blizzards (Namalsk) - demanding maps and rules.DayZ M / L

Guidelines for sizing: what counts is player count and mod load. Large setups with DayZ Expansion, traders and custom maps need considerably more RAM than a pure vanilla server - if in doubt, choose one level bigger. Prices per plan are on What does a DayZ server cost?.

Popular DayZ mods

Mods from the Steam Workshop turn a vanilla server into a world of its own - from vehicles and base building to trading systems and entire custom maps. A selection of widely used mods:

Community Framework (CF)
Base library required by many popular mods (including Expansion).
DayZ Expansion
Vehicles, base building, missions, market and quests - the big expansion pack.
Trader / Dr. Jones
Trading system with trader zones for buying and selling items.
VPPAdminTools
Extensive admin tool for moderation, teleports and spawns.
Base Building Plus (BBP)
Extended base building system with more parts and structures.
Custom maps
Namalsk, Deer Isle, Banov or Chiemsee as alternative worlds.

You upload mods via FTP/SFTP, enable them with -mod= and add the matching .bikey files - that is how BattlEye accepts the mod content.

Steam Workshop mods

DayZ Expansion, traders, base building and more - upload mods via FTP, enable them with a launch parameter and allow them with the matching BattlEye keys.

Maps & custom maps

Officially Chernarus and Livonia, plus community maps like Namalsk, Deer Isle or Banov - your world, your choice.

Central Economy

Control loot and spawns via types.xml, events.xml and cfgspawnabletypes.xml - from hardcore-scarce to loot-rich, just as your server type needs.

Config editor

Adjust server name, slots, map and day/night cycle comfortably in serverDZ.cfg with the editor in the web interface or via FTP/SFTP.

RCON & BattleMetrics

BattlEye RCON for BEC or BattleMetrics: kick, ban, broadcast and scheduled restarts - for clean moderation of your community.

Web file manager & SFTP

Full access to serverDZ.cfg, mission files, mods and BattlEye keys - via the web file manager in your browser or with an SFTP client.

DDoS protection

Our DDoS protection filters attacks of up to 250 Gbit/s - especially important for popular PvP and community servers.

High performance

Fast CPUs with high single-thread performance and NVMe SSDs keep the server smooth - even with large mod setups and a full map.

Made in Germany

All DayZ servers run in our data center near Frankfurt - short routes to players across Europe for low ping.

Provisioning

Thanks to our automated ordering system, your DayZ server is ready in around 120 seconds - load the map, set up your mods, survive.

24/7 support

Our support team helps around the clock, 365 days a year, via the ticket system - in English and German, with questions about mods, BattlEye, the Central Economy or the configuration.

Frequently asked questions - DayZ

DayZ does not sync Workshop mods to the server automatically - you install them by hand. You upload the mod folders via web file manager or SFTP, enable them with the -mod= launch parameter and, importantly, copy the matching .bikey files from each mod's keys folder into the server's keys directory. BattlEye checks these keys: if one is missing, players are kicked with a signature mismatch as soon as they touch the mod content. Many popular mods also require the Community Framework (CF) as a base.

Out of the box, the official maps Chernarus and Livonia are available. With Steam Workshop mods you can also add popular community maps like Namalsk, Deer Isle, Banov or Chiemsee. You set the map in serverDZ.cfg via the mission folder (template) - for custom maps, you upload the matching mission and the map mod.

The Central Economy (CE) is the loot and spawn system of DayZ. Through the mission files you control which items appear, how often and where: types.xml (quantities, respawn, lifetime per item), events.xml (events like vehicles and zombies) and cfgspawnabletypes.xml (attachments at spawn). That way you tailor the loot exactly to your server type - from hardcore-scarce to loot-rich. We give you FTP/SFTP access to all mission files for that.

DayZ uses BattlEye as its anti-cheat. For mods, the key system is what matters: every mod comes with .bikey files that belong in the server's keys folder - only then does BattlEye accept the mod content. You can also adjust BattlEye filters (for example scripts.txt) so legitimate mod scripts are not blocked by mistake. All relevant files are accessible via FTP/SFTP.

Yes. DayZ supports RCON via the BattlEye protocol. You connect with tools like BEC (BattlEye Extended Controls) or via BattleMetrics and control the server at runtime - kick, ban, broadcast, scheduled restarts and messages. For deeper in-game moderation, many owners also use admin mods like VPPAdminTools. You can find the RCON credentials in the web interface.

serverDZ.cfg is the central server configuration: server name, password, maximum players, day/night cycle, the map in use (template) and many gameplay parameters. You edit it via the config editor in the web interface or via FTP/SFTP. Loot and spawns are kept separately in the Central Economy files of the mission.

DayZ is memory-hungry. A vanilla server for small groups gets by with a medium amount of RAM, while large mod setups with DayZ Expansion, traders and custom maps need considerably more - especially with many players. The plan structure is a good guide: S/M for vanilla and light mods, L/XL for Expansion servers and large communities. If in doubt, choose one level bigger - you can upgrade at any time without losing data.

No. DayZ strictly separates PC and console servers, and Steam Workshop mods only run on PC servers. A rented, moddable DayZ server is therefore aimed at the PC version. Console players only connect to the official console servers without custom mods.

You set up scheduled restarts via RCON tools like BEC - common practice for DayZ to keep the server fresh and stable. Automatic backups are not part of the plan: you back up your save and the mission files yourself at any time via SFTP or the web file manager in your browser, and restore them immediately when needed.

After a successful order, our automated system activates your DayZ server in around 120 seconds. You can upgrade to a bigger plan at any time later; map, mods and configuration are fully kept.
