FiveM server: tutorials & guidesEverything you need to know before and after ordering

From the question of how much power a roleplay server really needs, through ports and DDoS protection, to billing: this is where we collect all guides relevant to your own FiveM server.

20 topicsESX & QBCoreMySQL included

A FiveM server is something different from a classic game server. You do not get a finished game world with a few switches, but an empty construction kit: only your resources - the scripts, vehicles, interiors and menus in the resources folder - turn it into a freeroam server, a drift meet or an entire roleplay city. Preparation looks correspondingly different.

Three things ultimately decide whether your project runs. First, the database: as soon as a framework such as ESX or QBCore is involved, characters, inventories, vehicles and bank accounts live in MySQL - without a database, there is no roleplay. That is why it is part of the FiveM server with us. Second, the order in the server.cfg: database connector, then framework, then everything that builds on it. If a dependency sits too far down, the server complains right at startup - visible in the console, which runs along in the browser with us. And third, performance: a serious RP server with hundreds of scripts, custom vehicles and MLOs needs many times per player what a simple freeroam server asks for.

The guides below are sorted in the order in which the questions come up: first get the server running with license key, server.cfg and resources, then build roleplay with database, framework and your own content, then keep it stable and take it along when you move. At the end, you find the buying advice and the basics that apply to every game server - each with a view to what they mean for FiveM.

One thing applies to every FiveM project: it is a modification of the PC version of Grand Theft Auto V. Every player needs a legal copy of the game and the FiveM client - console players cannot join. In return, you have full control over what your city looks like, which rules apply and who is allowed to do what.

Getting started

The first steps from an empty server to your own project.

Cfx.re license key

Generate the free key in the Cfx.re Portal and enter it under sv_licenseKey - no server starts without it.

server.cfg explained

Identity, database, load order and permissions - the central file from top to bottom.

Install resources

Upload scripts, start them with ensure and read the console messages correctly.

Set up txAdmin

Activate the official FXServer panel yourself - including deployer recipes for ESX and QBCore.

Building roleplay

Framework, database and your own content - the way to an RP server.

Database & phpMyAdmin

Connect MySQL, import SQL files and take backups - the basis of every framework.

Set up an ESX server

The classic among RP frameworks: structure, load order and typical pitfalls.

Set up a QBCore server

The modern alternative to ESX - a layered structure and differences in the ecosystem.

MLOs & custom vehicles

Add your own buildings and cars via the stream folder - and what they cost.

Grant admin permissions

The ACE system, identifiers and a role model that works in a team.

Operation & migration

What keeps the server stable day to day - and how to take it with you.

Update artifacts

Check and renew the FXServer build: Recommended or Latest, the minimum build and the way in the panel.

Improve server performance

Find the bottleneck instead of upgrading blindly: resource monitor, restarts and what hardware can do.

Move your server

Take resources, database and server.cfg along - without losing characters or vehicles.

Ports & firewall

How the fixed server address is made up of IP and port.

DDoS protection explained

Why public RP servers with a loyal community are a worthwhile target.

Before you order

The buying advice - with FiveM, the package size depends more on your scripts than on the number of players.

How much does a FiveM server cost?

Prices per package, the actual cost drivers and items many people overlook.

Rent a server with txAdmin

txAdmin is included in every plan - which package a recipe server with ESX or QBCore needs.

How much RAM do I need?

Guide values compared with all other games.

Slots explained

Why we do not sell slots and you decide the player count yourself.

Prepaid or subscription?

Credit instead of a contract - in line with the life cycle of an RP project.

Game server or VPS?

When the ready-made game server is enough and when root access is the better choice.

Frequently asked questions

Both are frameworks that turn an empty FiveM server into a roleplay server: they bring characters, jobs, inventory and an economy that all scripts build on. ESX is the older and most widespread approach with a huge selection of ready-made scripts. QBCore has a more modern structure and a very active community. Both need a MySQL database - with us, it is part of the server.

Not for a pure freeroam or drift server with a few standalone scripts. As soon as progress is to be saved - characters, vehicles, inventory, bank accounts -, there is no way around a database. That is why a MySQL/MariaDB database is included with our FiveM servers.

No. FiveM is a modification of the PC version of Grand Theft Auto V. Every player needs a legal copy of GTA V via Steam, the Rockstar Games Launcher or Epic as well as the FiveM client. Players on PlayStation or Xbox cannot join.

You set the upper limit yourself via sv_maxclients - we do not sell slots. In practice, the load decides: every additional script, every custom vehicle and every interior costs performance, regardless of how many people are online. That is why the next larger package is usually the right choice for a growing RP project.

Yes. You upload your resources folder including the server.cfg via WebFTP or SFTP and import the database as an SQL export. Afterwards, you only adjust the database connection details in the server.cfg - the rest stays as it was.

Automatic backups are not part of the plan. You download resources and configuration yourself at any time via SFTP or the WebFTP file manager, and you back up the database as an SQL export. Before larger script updates, that is the better habit than any automation anyway.
