Update FiveM server artifactsCheck, choose and safely renew your FXServer build

Server artifacts are the program your FiveM server runs on. If they are too old, players can no longer join or new resources fail. This guide explains the Recommended, Optional and Latest channels, shows how to find your build and takes you safely through the update.

What FiveM artifacts are

FiveM separates the server program from your content. Artifacts are the ready-built versions of FXServer that Cfx.re publishes continuously. Each one carries a build number. Your server.cfg, the resources folder and the database, on the other hand, belong to you and have nothing to do with the build at first.

That is what keeps an update manageable: it replaces the program, not your project. It can still have consequences, because every resource was written for certain FXServer versions. A new build can disturb old scripts, and an old build can deny new scripts the functions they need.

Do not confuse artifacts with the game build. The artifact build is the version of the server program. The game build determines which state of GTA V players use, and it is set in server.cfg with sv_enforceGameBuild. They are two separate settings, although some resources need a recent artifact build for new game builds.

Recommended, Optional or Latest?

Cfx.re publishes builds in channels that differ in risk:

ChannelWhat it meansSuits
Recommendedtested by Cfx.re as stable for live useevery production server
Optionalnewer, mostly stable, minor issues possibletesting ahead of the next Recommended
Latestnewest state, not tested for live usetests and development

For a roleplay server with a community, Recommended is the right choice. The highest build number is not automatically the best one. Latest is worthwhile if a resource explicitly demands a newer build - and then ideally on a copy first.

Minimum build: why old servers stop accepting players

Cfx.re supports each build for a limited time only. Once that period ends, the client shows notices such as End of Support or End of Life when connecting, and the server disappears from the server list or can no longer be joined.

Most recently, Cfx.re drew a line on 15 October 2026: servers on a build below 35245 no longer accept connections. If you have not changed anything for months, check your build now. The line will keep moving up in future, so an update every few months is simply part of running a server.

Find out your build

  • Console: at startup, the server states its version including the build number. You can see it in the console in the web interface.
  • txAdmin: if you use the panel, it shows the FXServer version and warns about outdated artifacts. It is included in every plan, see FiveM server with txAdmin.
  • Comparison: the current builds per channel are listed on the official artifact page at runtime.fivem.net/artifacts.

Updating artifacts at MainHoster.de

On our FiveM servers, you choose the build via the FIVEM_VERSION variable in the startup settings. You can use recommended, latest or a fixed build number. The setting does not take effect immediately, but only when the server files are fetched again. FiveM deliberately has no automatic game update with us, so that a new build does not change your project without you asking for it.

  1. Back up. Download server.cfg and resources via WebFTP or SFTP and export the database in phpMyAdmin. Backups are self-service with us.
  2. Choose the build. Set FIVEM_VERSION to recommended.
  3. Fetch the server files again. Trigger the reinstallation in the panel.
  4. Check. After the start, make sure server.cfg and resources are complete; otherwise restore them from your backup.
  5. Start and read. Watch the console for errors and join once yourself.

If something does not work after the update

  • A resource does not start. The console names it. Look for a newer version from its author.
  • The server does not start at all. First check the sv_licenseKey entry.
  • Missing models or crashes. The configured game build does not match the content. Check sv_enforceGameBuild.
  • Noticeably more lag than before. First measure which resource is slowing things down, for example with the resource monitor in txAdmin.

If you need a way back, set FIVEM_VERSION to the previous build number and fetch the files again - as long as that build is still above the minimum. So note down the current number before every update. Which plan suits your project is covered in How much does a FiveM server cost?.

Frequently asked questions

For a live server, the Recommended channel. Optional and Latest are newer but less proven and are better suited to tests on a copy.

Often the build is too old. Since 15 October 2026, servers below build 35245 no longer accept connections. Check the number in the console and update the artifacts.

Artifacts only replace the server program; resources, server.cfg and the database are not part of them. Back them up beforehand anyway and check after the update that everything is complete.

The artifact build is the version of the server program. The game build determines the GTA V state of the players and is set in server.cfg with sv_enforceGameBuild.
