Join a Hytale serverEnter the address made of IP and port, save it as a favorite, start playing

You get onto a Hytale server through the game's server menu: enter the address, connect, done. One detail decides it, though, and it is where most first attempts fail - the port is part of the address. This guide shows both ways into the game, explains what happens on the very first start of your own server and what to do if the connection does not work.

What you need to join

Three things, nothing more:

  • The server address made of IP and port. With us, it is shown in your server's web interface in the form IP:Port. Both parts belong together.
  • An up-to-date Hytale client. Client and server must use exactly the same protocol version, otherwise the server rejects the connection.
  • Access if the server is closed. If the server uses a whitelist or has a password, your name has to be on the list or you need the password.

An important note on the port: with us, several servers share one IP, and they are told apart by the port. The Hytale default port 5520 is only for orientation - what counts is always the port shown for your server in the web interface. If you only enter the IP, you end up on a port your server is not listening on at all.

Step by step: via direct connection

The fastest way for a first test:

  1. Start Hytale and open the server view in the main menu.
  2. Choose the direct connection.
  3. Enter the full address, meaning IP:Port - safest by copying it from the web interface rather than typing it.
  4. Connect. The first time, the client loads the server's content, which takes a moment longer than later on.

If the direct connection works, your server works. Everything else is convenience.

Saving the server in your list

For everyday play, an entry in your own server list is worth it: via "Add server", you give it a name and enter the same address with port. After that, a double-click on the entry is enough. Your fellow players should do this once on the first evening - then nobody types digits anymore, and a transposed digit in the port is no longer a source of errors.

A domain of your own instead of the address sounds tempting, but only helps to a limited extent in Hytale: according to Hypixel, Hytale does not currently support SRV records, which could hide the port behind a name. So a name can at most replace the IP - the port still has to be added.

The very first start of your own server

If you have just ordered the server, take a look at the console before joining for the first time. Hytale servers have to sign in with Hypixel once before they accept players. With us, a link and a code appear automatically in the console in the web interface on the first start. You open the link, sign in with your Hytale account and confirm the code - only then does the server start fully.

You do not need a command for this, and you never enter your password anywhere on the server. As long as this step is pending, every attempt to join fails - that is the most common reason why a freshly ordered server is "not reachable".

After that, the order that causes the least rework is: join yourself, make yourself an admin, close the group with a whitelist or password if needed and only then pass on the address.

What to do on your router at home

Nothing. Hytale connects via the QUIC protocol over UDP. Only people who run a server at home themselves need port forwarding on the router - as a player on a rented server, you do not have to set anything up. According to Hypixel, players behind mobile or carrier-grade NAT usually connect without problems as well.

Things can look different on company, school or dorm networks that block outgoing UDP traffic on unusual ports. There, the only thing that usually helps is a test from another network, for example via your phone's hotspot. More on how address, port and firewall work together is in Ports and firewall.

When joining fails

  • The port is missing or wrong. By far the most common case. Copy the address from the web interface again.
  • The server is not fully running yet. Check the console - if the prompt for account linking is still there or the world is still loading, wait a moment.
  • Different versions. After a Hytale update, client and server have to catch up. How that works is explained in Update your Hytale server.
  • Not on the whitelist. If the whitelist is active, anyone who is not listed gets kicked.
  • A mod prevents the start. If the server does not start at all because of a faulty mod, Install mods helps you track it down.

For all other cases, there is a detailed checklist in Fix Hytale connection problems.

Inviting friends

To invite someone, the address made of IP and port is all you need. Ideally, share it as copyable text, not as a screenshot - that way, no typos creep in. If the server is closed, add your friends' names to the whitelist beforehand or give them the password.

Your fellow players usually do not have to install mods themselves: Hytale relies on server-side modding, and the content comes from the server when they connect. The first join on a server with many mods therefore takes a little longer. You bring a world of your own from single player onto the server beforehand via Upload a world - then the group starts right where you left off.
