Navezgane: the hand-built map
Navezgane is the fixed map designed by The Fun Pimps, with well-known towns, points of interest and landmarks. It is predictable and beginner-friendly - you know where the good loot spots and traders are. You choose it in the serverconfig.xml:
<property name="GameWorld" value="Navezgane"/> 7 Days to Die server hosting from €7.99 / month

RWG (Random World Generation) creates a unique world of a freely selectable size from a seed. That makes every server one of a kind:
<property name="GameWorld" value="RWG"/>
<property name="WorldGenSeed" value="MySeed"/>
<property name="WorldGenSize" value="6144"/>
The WorldGenSeed is a freely chosen text - the same seed always produces the same world (with the same game version). The WorldGenSize specifies the edge length in blocks (multiples of 2048, typically 6144 or 8192); larger maps need more RAM and take longer to generate.
Changing the map = a new world
If you change GameWorld or the seed, the server generates a new world - the progress of the old world does not carry over. Back up your save via FTP beforehand if you want to keep it. With RWG, it is worth letting the map generate once in peace before players join.
External map generators
If you want to see the map in advance or design it specifically, use external tools such as Nitrogen or KingGen to generate an RWG world on your PC. You then upload the finished world via FTP into the server's worlds folder and enter its name as GameWorld.
The advantage is tangible: before the start, you see where the towns are, how the roads run and whether the layout suits your group. If you do not like it, generate a new one on your PC - instead of first generating it on the server and then finding out that all trading posts are on the same edge. Make sure the tool matches the game version: maps from older generators otherwise lead to missing or faulty buildings.
The levers of the RWG world
A random world is created from a few entries in the serverconfig.xml. Each of them shapes the game feel in its own way:
| Value | Effect |
|---|---|
GameWorld | Navezgane for the hand-built map, RWG for a random one, or the folder name of a world you generated yourself. |
WorldGenSeed | The starting value. The same seed produces the same map with the same game version and size - handy for rebuilding a successful world later. |
WorldGenSize | Edge length in meters, typically 4096 to 10240. Larger maps need more memory and considerably more time to generate. |
GameName | The name of the save, not the world. A new name starts a new round on the same map. |
A recommendation from practice on size: 6144 is the best compromise for most rounds. 4096 quickly gets tight with more than four players, 10240 means you never run into each other and generation takes a very long time.
What happens on the first start
If the server generates the world itself, the first start takes considerably longer than usual - a few minutes, depending on size. During this time, it does not respond and does not appear in any server list. That is normal and no reason to abort the process: a restart in the middle leaves an incomplete world that throws errors afterwards.
Afterwards, the world sits on the server as a folder and is simply loaded at every further start. If you change WorldGenSeed or WorldGenSize afterwards, nothing happens at first - the existing world remains. Only when you remove it or enter a different GameWorld name is a new one generated.
Back up the worlds and saves folder via WebFTP or SFTP before such interventions. Backups are self-service throughout with us, see create backups - that way, a beloved map is not lost even after a mistake.
