What Wingman does differently
Wingman is not a scaled-down competitive game but a mode of its own with its own rules:
- Two against two instead of five against five.
- Only one bomb site - the maps are tailored accordingly.
- Shorter rounds and a shorter match than in classic competitive.
- A different economy - with two players, money behaves quite differently.
For a duo that wants to work specifically on aim, utility and communication, this is the most efficient form of practice - the share of duels per round is far higher than in 5v5.

Wingman works through the same mechanism as the other built-in modes - two convars plus a map change:
game_type 0
game_mode 2
This combination stands for Wingman. As with every mode change, the switch only takes full effect when a map is loaded afterwards - most cleanly via the startup parameters, otherwise via changelevel.
The server then loads the config matching the mode. Your own values therefore belong in a file that you reload via exec - see server.cfg explained.
Maps for Wingman
Wingman is played on maps tailored specifically for it. Valve supplies a selection that rotates over time - usually recognizable by a corresponding suffix in the map name.
Beyond that, there is a large selection of community Wingman maps in the Workshop. You add them like any other Workshop map, individually or as a collection - the process is described in Workshop maps & collections.
Important: loading a normal 5v5 map in Wingman mode works technically, but plays badly - spawns and bomb sites do not fit the mode.
Adjust the rules
The mode config comes with sensible defaults. What duos typically change:
| Convar | Why adjust it |
|---|---|
mp_maxrounds | adapt the match length to the time available |
mp_overtime_enable | switch overtime on or off for a tie |
mp_startmoney | ease the economy for practice rounds |
mp_roundtime_defuse | round length - can often be shortened on small maps |
sv_password | shield a private server for your own duo |
After changing round values, mp_restartgame 1 makes sure they take effect immediately rather than only at the next half.
Wingman with match control
Anyone using the mode for small tournaments or serious league games wants the same control as in 5v5: ready system, knife round, pauses and recording.
That is handled by MatchZy, which builds on Metamod and CounterStrikeSharp. The team size can be set to two there, so the familiar match flow also works in the Wingman format.
For pure training evenings, on the other hand, the plain mode without a plugin is entirely sufficient.
Understanding the economy in 2v2
The point where Wingman differs most clearly from 5v5 - and the one most often underestimated during setup: with two players per side, everything is spread over two wallets instead of five.
- No compensation from teammates. If you are short of money in 5v5, someone drops you a weapon. In a duo, this buffer is almost completely missing - a lost round hits both directly.
- Utility costs proportionally more. Smoke plus flash are a noticeable part of the round budget in 2v2, not the footnote they are in a full buy.
- Individual rounds weigh more. Because the mode config provides for a considerably shorter match than classic competitive, the pistol round decides a larger share of the game.
For practice evenings, it is therefore worth deliberately easing the economy: set mp_startmoney high so that you practice the situation you want to practice instead of saving for two rounds. Conversely, for serious games: hands off the mode config's defaults, they are tuned to the format. If you need both, keep two files and switch via exec.
Private for your own duo or public
Both modes of operation make sense, but they place different requirements on the setup:
| Point | Private | Public |
|---|---|---|
| Access | sv_password set | open, with admin access via RCON ready to hand |
| GSLT | not needed for joining via IP and port, but needed for Workshop maps | mandatory, otherwise the server does not appear in the browser |
| Maps | your choice, community maps welcome | well-known maps, otherwise visitors drop out again |
| Occupancy | four players plus spectators | plan room for people waiting |
You enter the token as described in create and enter a GSLT. In both cases, fellow players connect via the fixed server address made up of IP and port as shown in the panel - the process is described in join a CS2 server. If the server does not appear for others at all, server not reachable helps narrow it down.
For a duo that only trains together, the private way is the more pragmatic one: no token, no server browser, no strangers dropping in during practice. You can warm up beforehand on the same server as a deathmatch server.
