Two ways to an arena
1v1 arena is not a built-in mode. There are two implementations that differ considerably in effort:
- Arena map only: a multi-arena map from the Workshop brings the zones and often the promotion/relegation logic as well. No plugin needed, ready to use immediately.
- Map plus plugin: a 1v1 plugin based on CounterStrikeSharp adds a leaderboard, weapon rounds, statistics and a clean queue.
For a server among friends, the first variant is entirely sufficient. As soon as you want a permanent leaderboard or fixed weapon sequences, there is no way around the plugin.

The fastest way. You look for a multi-arena map in the Workshop and include it:
- Choose a map in the Workshop and note its ID.
- Load it via
host_workshop_map- the process is described in Workshop maps & collections. - Set the mode to competitive or deathmatch, depending on what the map expects.
- Shield the server with
sv_passwordif it is to stay private.
Many arena maps control equipment and round flow via their own scripts. Read the map's description - it usually states which mode and which convars are expected.
Variant 2: with a plugin
For a public duel server with a leaderboard, you need the usual foundation: Metamod and CounterStrikeSharp. The 1v1 plugin builds on top of it.
What such a plugin typically brings:
- Queue - players are assigned to arenas automatically.
- Promotion and relegation - winners move up, losers move down.
- Weapon rounds - a fixed sequence, for example rifle, pistol, AWP, Deagle.
- Statistics - a permanent leaderboard across several sessions.
When choosing, make sure the plugin matches the installed CounterStrikeSharp version - a mismatch is the most common reason why the server no longer starts after installation. See server not reachable.
Sensible settings
Regardless of the variant, these values have proven themselves:
| Convar | Recommendation |
|---|---|
mp_freezetime | keep it short - in 1v1, every wait is annoying |
mp_roundtime | considerably shorter than in 5v5 |
mp_free_armor | 2, so that duels stay comparable |
mp_death_drop_gun | 0, so that no weapons lie around |
mp_warmuptime | short - the server should run continuously |
These values belong in a config of their own that you load via exec after switching modes - otherwise the mode config overwrites them again. Why that is so is explained in server.cfg explained.
How many duels run at the same time
The number of simultaneous duels is not set by the plugin but by the map: every arena needs its own pair of spawns, and a multi-arena map brings a fixed number of them. Four arenas mean eight players in duels - everyone else waits, no matter how many slots the server has.
That determines the choice of map. For a fixed group of four to six people, a small map with two or three arenas feels tidier. A public server with changing visitors needs considerably more zones, otherwise half the round stands in the queue and is gone again after ten minutes.
- Odd player count - one person is left over per round. A plugin moves them into the queue; without a plugin, it depends on the map whether they watch or wander around aimlessly.
- Slots are not the bottleneck - they are unlimited on our CS2 plans. The arenas of the map are the limiting factor.
- Make waiting time visible - anyone who knows they are next stays. A plugin with a queue display is therefore worth more on public servers than any additional weapon.
As with every game server, you connect via the fixed server address made up of IP and port - what counts is the port shown in the panel. How to pass it on is shown in join a CS2 server.
When the arena does not run smoothly
Three error patterns cover almost all cases, and they can be told apart by the symptom:
- Everyone spawns in the same place. Then the loaded map is not a real multi-arena map, or it expects a different mode. Check the description in the Workshop and reload the map after switching modes.
- The plugin does not show up anywhere.
css_plugins listvia RCON shows what is actually loaded. If the entry is missing, either the folder level underaddons/counterstrikesharp/plugins/is wrong or the version does not match the installed CounterStrikeSharp version. - The round values are back to default after a map change. A classic case of load order: the mode config comes after the
server.cfg. The arena values therefore belong in a file of their own that you reload afterwards viaexec.
If the leaderboard is empty after a restart, check in the plugin configuration where it is stored and back up this file via WebFTP or SFTP before updating the plugin. There are no automatic backups - backups are self-service throughout.
For warming up before the arena, the same server also works as a deathmatch server: switch the mode, load the matching config via exec, change the map. A second server is not needed for that.
