The one rule that determines everything
Journey worlds can only be entered with Journey characters - and conversely, Journey characters can only play in Journey worlds. The separation applies in both directions and cannot be bypassed.
For a server, this means: a Journey server is a decision for the whole group. Anyone who wants to come with their normal character cannot get in - and anyone who creates a Journey character cannot use it to switch to your classic server.
Clarify this with all players before setting things up. It is the most common reason why someone cannot join a Journey server, and from the outside it looks like a connection problem - see connection problems.

You control the world's difficulty in the serverconfig.txt. Journey mode is value 3 there:
autocreate=2
difficulty=3
worldname=JourneyWorld
| Value | Mode |
|---|---|
| 0 | Classic |
| 1 | Expert |
| 2 | Master |
| 3 | Journey |
The timing is decisive: the value has to be set before the world is created. It affects world generation via autocreate. An existing classic world cannot be converted into a Journey world afterwards with built-in tools.
If you want to switch on a running server, that means: back up the old world, set difficulty=3, let a new world be generated. How to keep the old one is explained in create backups.
What Journey mode can do in the game
The Journey powers are operated in the game via a menu of their own, not via the server configuration. The scope:
- Research - research items in a certain quantity and then duplicate them freely.
- Time - set the time of day and freeze or speed up the flow of time.
- Weather - control rain and wind.
- Enemy density - spawn rate and maximum number of simultaneous enemies.
- Difficulty while playing - continuously between Journey and Master.
- Godmode and other convenience features.
That makes Journey servers particularly attractive for two purposes: building projects, where materials and night-time attacks only get in the way, and community events, where someone controls weather and enemies as game master.
Research in multiplayer
A detail that noticeably shapes cooperation: researched items are shared between players of the same team - but not retroactively. Only what was researched while the other players were in the world is shared.
The practical consequence: anyone who joins later does not automatically get the research the others have already completed. For a group that wants to build a collection together, it is therefore worth doing the research in shared sessions instead of on the side alone.
This is not a bug and cannot be changed on the server side - it is intended that way.
Journey server or classic server?
| Journey server | Classic / Expert / Master | |
|---|---|---|
| Who can join | Journey characters only | all normal characters |
| Progress | freely adjustable | earned by playing |
| Suited to | building, testing, events | playing through together |
| Switching later | not possible - a new world is needed | |
Because switching is not possible, some groups run both: a classic server for the campaign and a Journey server as a building site. Since everything runs on prepaid without a contract, a second server for a building phase is not a long-term commitment - see prepaid or subscription?.
By the way, Journey mode also works with tModLoader. Then the rules for modded servers apply on top - mods have to match for everyone.
