Upload your Enshrouded save to the serverMove your world from single-player or a co-op session to your own server

You have been playing your world with a host so far and want to take it to a server of your own? That works, and it takes less than a quarter of an hour. This guide shows where Enshrouded stores saves, which files belong to a world, how to name and upload them - and why your character doesn't need to move at all.

What moves - and what doesn't

Enshrouded strictly separates world and character. Keen Games writes in its server FAQ that character progression is stored only on the players' computers, while the world progression is stored on the server.

  • The world moves: terrain, bases, Flame Altars, residents, chests and your progress through the Shroud.
  • Characters don't move - and don't need to. Level, skills, inventory and equipment stay with each player and come along automatically when they join.

That also means only the person on whose computer the world has been running so far - the previous host - has to upload anything. Everyone else simply joins the new server afterwards. A world is small, according to Keen between 1 MB and around 100 MB, so the upload is quick.

Step 1: Find the save on your PC

Quit Enshrouded completely before copying. The game writes a fresh state when it closes, and only then is the copy current. Since version 1.0, local saves are stored here:

%USERPROFILE%\Saved Games\keen games\Enshrouded\default\

You can paste that path into the address bar of Windows Explorer. Before 1.0, saves sat directly under Saved Games\Enshrouded\; 1.0 converts older worlds the first time they load.

If you play with Steam Cloud, the newest state may be under Steam\userdata\<your ID>\1203620\remote instead. Since 1.0, the world selection shows local and cloud worlds on separate tabs - so the tab tells you which folder your world is in.

Step 2: Identify the right files

Worlds are not named after their in-game name but after a fixed ID that Enshrouded assigns in order of creation. Your first world is called 3ad85aea, the second 3bd85c7d, the third 38d857c4. Each world consists of several files starting with the same ID:

  • the main file without an extension, for example 3ad85aea,
  • numbered copies such as 3ad85aea-1 to 3ad85aea-9 - according to Keen, Enshrouded keeps ten rotating copies of every world,
  • a file ending in -index that records which copy is the current one,
  • on the PC, additional _info files with metadata such as the world name.

Copy all files that start with your world's ID. The current copy is often not the main file but one of the numbered ones - if you only take the main file, you may end up with a state from hours ago.

Step 3: Upload to the server

  1. Start the server once and stop it again. In doing so, it creates its own save in the savegame folder. The file name is assigned by the game itself - that shows you the name under which your server stores its world.
  2. Download the contents of savegame and keep them. That is your way back if something goes wrong.
  3. Name your files the way the server's world is named. The server only loads the world it expects under its own name. So rename the ID of your files to match the files the server created - suffixes like -1 or -index stay the same.
  4. Delete the old world files in the savegame folder and upload your renamed files via WebFTP or SFTP. For large worlds, SFTP is more convenient because interrupted transfers resume.
  5. Start the server and join. You should be standing in your world with all bases and altars.

How to get your fellow players onto the server is in Join an Enshrouded server. Remember to set the passwords of the user groups first - see User groups and password.

If something isn't right

  • The server starts with a fresh world. The files don't carry the name the server expects, or they aren't directly in the savegame folder. Check both in the file manager.
  • The world loads, but the progress is old. The -index file points to a numbered copy that wasn't uploaded. Quit the game cleanly on your PC once and copy all files of the ID again.
  • The world comes from an old version. Since 1.0, Enshrouded converts older saves into a new format the first time they load. If in doubt, open the world once in the current game beforehand, then it is already converted.

From now on, the save is not copied anywhere outside the server by itself. How to take your own copy regularly and restore a state is shown in Updates and backup.

Frequently asked questions

Since version 1.0 under %USERPROFILE%\Saved Games\keen games\Enshrouded\default\. With Steam Cloud, the newest state may also be under Steam\userdata\your ID\1203620\remote. On the server, the world is in the savegame folder.

No. Enshrouded stores characters on each player's computer. Only the world goes onto the server; everyone brings their level and inventory along when they join.

All files starting with the world's ID, 3ad85aea for the first world: the main file, the numbered copies, the -index file and, on the PC, the _info files. Always copy the whole set.

The uploaded files don't carry the name under which the server expects its world, or they aren't directly in the savegame folder. Name them like the files the server created itself.
