Update your Enshrouded server and back up your saveWhat happens with a patch, what 1.0 changed and how to restore your world

On an Enshrouded server there is exactly one thing you cannot replace: the world. This guide shows how updates work with us, what version 1.0 means for existing worlds, which files belong in a backup and how to restore an older state when an update, a guest with too many permissions or a mistake has ruined the base.

Updates: automatic with us

After an Enshrouded patch, your server is updated automatically with us. Save, configuration and user groups are kept. You don't have to download anything or run any command.

On the players' side: client and server should be on the same version. Anyone who can't get in shortly after a patch restarts Steam once so the game pulls its update. If someone still can't find the server after that, the checklist in Join an Enshrouded server helps.

Before large content updates, your own copy of the save is still worth it. An update can convert a world, and a way back only exists if you backed up the old state beforehand.

What version 1.0 changed

Enshrouded 1.0 was released on 15 October 2026 and was the biggest update a server has received so far. The most important points for server owners:

  • Existing worlds remain usable. Keen converts early access saves into a new, more efficient format the first time they load.
  • The skill tree was reset. That affects characters, not the server. Every player redistributes their points - ideally before leaving the base.
  • New level caps: players up to level 50, equipment up to level 55.
  • The whole world is accessible, including the new region Cinder's Cradle. Because Keen reworked large parts of the world and the first hours of play, the developer explicitly recommends starting over in a fresh world.
  • No crossplay. PC and PS5 are separate, and the Xbox version follows in 2027.

If you want to keep playing your old world, you can. If you want to start over, back up the old world, empty the savegame folder and let the server create a fresh world at the next start. That way the old state is kept in case the group wants to go back after all.

What needs backing up

Two things are enough for a complete backup:

  • The savegame folder with all files in it. It contains the world: terrain, bases, altars, chests and progress.
  • enshrouded_server.json with name, rules, user groups and ban list.

You don't need to back up characters - and you can't. Keen stores level, skills and inventory on the players' computers. That has a pleasant consequence: if you restore an older world state, nobody loses their character. The equipment stays; only the bases jump back to the old state.

Always back up the whole folder, never individual files from it. According to Keen, Enshrouded keeps several rotating copies of a world and records in an index file which one is current. If you pick out just one file, you may be backing up an old state.

How to create a backup

  1. Stop the server. When shutting down, Enshrouded writes a last state, so the copy is current.
  2. Download the savegame folder and enshrouded_server.json - in the browser via the WebFTP file manager or with an SFTP program.
  3. Name the copy with the date, for example enshrouded-2026-11-03, and store it in a safe place.
  4. Start the server again.

Backups are self-service with us: we don't take automatic copies of your world. In return, you have full access to all files at any time and decide yourself which state to keep. Good moments are before every large update, before you change rules or groups, before new players with building permissions join - and simply regularly, for example once a week. According to Keen, a world is at most around 100 MB, so a backup takes hardly any time.

Restoring a state

  1. Stop the server.
  2. Download the current savegame folder, even if it looks broken - in case you need to go back.
  3. Delete the contents of savegame on the server and upload the files from your backup, complete and without renaming them.
  4. Start the server and join. The world is at the backed-up state, and the characters are unchanged.

Bringing in a world from another server or from single-player works similarly but requires matching file names. That is covered in detail in Upload your save. And if a base is repeatedly damaged by guests, the better solution is usually to take away the canEditWorld permission - see User groups and password.

Frequently asked questions

No. After a patch, your server is updated automatically with us. Save, configuration and user groups are kept.

Yes. Keen converts early access saves into the new format the first time they load. Because of the reworked world, however, the developer recommends starting over. Back up the old world beforehand in any case.

There is no automatic backup by us. Backups are self-service: download the savegame folder and enshrouded_server.json regularly via WebFTP or SFTP, especially before large updates.

No. Enshrouded stores characters on the players' computers. A restored world state only resets bases and the world; level and equipment stay.
