Vehicles are events, not loot
Normal loot is distributed through loot categories. Vehicles, on the other hand, run through events: events.xml defines how many vehicles of which type should be on the map at the same time and at which points they may appear.
In addition, types.xml sets the usual values for each vehicle type - above all nominal as the target count and lifetime as the expiry time. The two files work together; if you change only one, often nothing happens.
The basics of this system are explained in Central Economy & loot - this guide builds on it.

Bring more vehicles onto the map
- Stop the server - changes made while it runs are overwritten on shutdown.
- In
events.xml, find the matching vehicle event and raise the target count. - In
types.xml, raise thenominalvalue of the vehicle type accordingly. - Start the server and give the Central Economy time - vehicles do not all appear at once.
The last point is the most common reason for disappointment: the Central Economy fills up gradually. After a restart, not every slot is taken right away; it takes a while until the target count is reached.
Also keep in mind that the number of spawn points sets a hard upper limit: if only 30 points are defined, a target count of 60 does nothing.
Since Update 1.30, the motorbikes have joined the vehicle pool on all maps; you control how often they appear in the same way. More on that in DayZ Badlands server.
Why vehicles are unusable
In DayZ, vehicles deliberately spawn incomplete - usually without wheels, battery, spark plug or fluids. That is intentional, not a bug: searching for parts is part of the game.
If you want to soften that, raise the probabilities for the parts that spawn along with the vehicle in the configuration. On a beginner-friendly server, this is one of the most effective adjustments there is - nothing frustrates new players more than finding three cars and not being able to move any of them.
On hardcore survival servers, the opposite applies: leave it as it is. A car that is ready to drive should be an event.
Vehicles disappear again
A common annoyance: the car you painstakingly repaired is gone the next day. There are several possible reasons for this:
- Expiry time reached - the
lifetimevalue determines how long an untouched vehicle remains. Moving it usually resets the timer. - Server restart with the vehicle in an awkward position - vehicles on slopes or inside buildings can slide or be destroyed on restart.
- Game state problems - see server will not start.
If you want vehicles to last longer, raise the expiry time considerably. That costs performance, though: every existing vehicle is a persistent object that is carried along permanently.
Intervene directly as an admin
For events, or to make up for a server problem, you sometimes want to place a vehicle directly. That works through admin tools, not through the configuration:
- Through an admin tool from the mod scene that provides an in-game spawn menu.
- Through RCON tools, if they support it.
Tools like these are mods and therefore follow the same rules as all others: matching version, .bikey in the keys folder, correct load order - see install mods. Use them sparingly; a server where the admin hands out vehicles quickly loses its appeal.
