Cobblemon server hostingThe open-source creature collecting and battling mod for Fabric and NeoForge

Cobblemon brings more than 800 creatures to catch, train and battle into Minecraft, and deliberately fits into the normal game instead of replacing it: the creatures live in the existing biomes, battles take place right in the world, and if you want, you keep building in between. For the server, one quirk matters most - it needs considerably less than the official modpack most players connect with. For a private group, plan M at €5.99 / month is enough.

Mod or modpack - what belongs on the server

Two different things go by the name Cobblemon, and telling them apart saves memory on the server. The mod contains everything that makes up the game: the creatures, catching, battles and evolution. The official modpack wraps a collection for player comfort around it - performance mods such as Sodium and FerriteCore, Xaero's Minimap and World Map, inventory helpers, better tooltips and dynamic lighting.

A large part of that only works on the client. The developers therefore state explicitly that the modpack also connects to servers that run only Cobblemon and the required dependency. For you, that means: the server can stay lean while your players use the complete modpack with map and visual mods. Installing the whole pack on the server instead isn't wrong, but you pay for memory spent on content nobody sees there.

Both routes use the same sources: mod and modpack are on Modrinth and CurseForge and can be installed with the installer in the panel. The general Minecraft plans and what drives their price are explained in How much does a Minecraft server cost?.

Fabric or NeoForge: one decision for the whole group

Cobblemon exists for both loaders, and the official modpack accordingly comes in two editions. The developers recommend Fabric, citing better performance. NeoForge is the right choice if Cobblemon is meant to run alongside other mods that only exist for that loader.

What matters is that the decision applies to everyone. A player with the Fabric edition can't join a NeoForge server and vice versa. So settle on the loader before you hand out the address, and mention it together with the version number.

As with every mod loader: Bukkit and Spigot plugins don't run. Permissions, land claims and economy come from mods for the chosen loader, not from the familiar plugin names of the Paper world.

Custom content via datapacks

Cobblemon is designed to be extended. Custom variants and self-designed creatures reach the server via datapacks and resource packs - the same mechanisms Minecraft already has. The datapack supplies the data, the resource pack the models and textures.

That has two consequences for running the server. The datapack goes into the world's datapacks folder and takes effect after a restart. And the players need the matching resource pack, otherwise they won't see the new creatures properly. The easiest way is to distribute it as a server resource pack that loads automatically when players join.

If you only know Cobblemon from hearsay and expect Pixelmon: both mods follow the same idea, but they are independent projects. Worlds and extensions can't be exchanged between them.

Which plan for Cobblemon?

The thresholds below apply to this pack - a light Vanilla+ pack and a kitchen-sink pack with a hundred running machines behave completely differently. You can upgrade at any time without losing data and only pay the difference.

Group Plan RAM Price Why Order
2-5 players, private Plan M 4 GB €5.99 / month Enough for a private group with Cobblemon and a few extra mods. Order M
6-20 players Plan L 8 GB €11.99 / month More loaded areas, more creatures active at once, parallel battles. Order L
Public server Plan XL 16 GB €21.99 / month Many players spread across the whole map, plus extra mods and custom content. Order XL
Complete modpack Plan L 8 GB €11.99 / month If you install the official modpack in full on the server, plan one tier more. Order L

The memory is taken proportionally from the plan via -XX:MaxRAMPercentage - you don't need to maintain a fixed -Xmx.

Setting up Cobblemon on the server

  1. Decide on the loader - Fabric or NeoForge - and tell your group together with the version number.
  2. Stop the server in the web interface. Setup and version changes only apply while the server is stopped.
  3. In the guided setup, choose the selected loader for Minecraft 1.21.1.
  4. Install Cobblemon with the installer from Modrinth or CurseForge - either just the mod plus dependency, or the official modpack in the edition for your loader.
  5. Under Startup, check in the Docker Image field that Java 21 is active.
  6. Start the server, wait for Done in the console and connect via IP and port. Your players need the same Cobblemon version on the same loader.

Common pitfalls with Cobblemon

Players can't join the server

Cause: Client and server use different loaders or different Cobblemon versions. The Fabric edition doesn't connect to a NeoForge server.

Fix: Match loader and version number on both sides. If that is correct, check that the address includes the port and that the server has finished starting.

Server aborts on start with a missing dependency

Cause: Cobblemon needs Fabric API on Fabric and Kotlin for Forge on NeoForge. If the file is missing, the mod doesn't load.

Fix: Put the dependency matching the Minecraft version into the mods/ folder. The installer in the panel usually pulls it in automatically.

A plugin can't be installed

Cause: Bukkit and Spigot plugins never run on a Fabric or NeoForge server.

Fix: Look for a mod for the loader in use that does the same job and put it into the mods/ folder.

Custom creatures appear as placeholders

Cause: The datapack is on the server, but the players are missing the matching resource pack with models and textures.

Fix: Set up the resource pack as a server resource pack so it loads when players join.

Frequently asked questions about Cobblemon

Fabric or NeoForge. The developers recommend Fabric for better performance; NeoForge fits if further mods are meant to run that only exist there. The server and all players must use the same loader.

No. According to the developers, the official modpack also connects to servers that run only Cobblemon and the required dependency. The pack's map, visual and performance mods mostly work on the client.

For a private group of up to five players, plan M with 4 GB is enough. For bigger groups or the fully installed modpack, plan L makes sense, and plan XL for public servers.

Java 21 for the current releases on Minecraft 1.21.1. You set the Java version in the panel under Startup via the Docker Image.

No. Cobblemon and Pixelmon are independent mods. Creatures, items and extensions of one mod don't exist in the other.
