The difference in one paragraph
Survival Evolved is the ARK that has been played for years: grown, mature, with a huge library of maps and Workshop mods. Survival Ascended is the same game on a newer graphics engine - prettier and more modern, but with much higher demands on client and server and a mod ecosystem that is still being built up.
Our ARK plans refer to Survival Evolved. Everything on this page and in the other ARK guides applies to this edition.

What speaks for Survival Evolved
- The mod library. Grown over years: structure packs, creatures, maps, complete overhauls. If you have a particular mod in mind, you will find it here - see Install mods.
- All maps available. From The Island to Fjordur, plus the large community maps. The overview is in Maps compared.
- Lower requirements. Servers and clients get by with much less - which feeds directly into the server price, see How much RAM does an ARK server need?
- Large player base. If you want to build a community, you will find more people here who already own and know the game.
When Ascended would be the right choice
It pays to be honest: Ascended has its place. If you care about current visuals, if your group has strong hardware and if you only play the official maps anyway, you will find a more modern feel there.
The price for that is real: both sides - the server and the players' PCs - need more power, and many favorite mods from Evolved do not exist there yet, or only in part. For groups whose play style is built on certain mods, that rules it out.
The decision in three questions
| Question | If yes |
|---|---|
| Does your group play with mods? | Survival Evolved - the library is many times larger. |
| Do you want a specific community map? | Survival Evolved - they are all available there. |
| Does everyone in the group have a current PC? | Then Ascended would be worth considering. |
In practice, the weakest hardware in the group usually decides. A server is of little use if half of the players cannot run the game smoothly on it.
What we provide for Evolved
Our ARK servers come with everything this edition needs: all official maps, Workshop mods via their mod IDs, the config editor for GameUserSettings.ini and Game.ini, admin commands and RCON, WebFTP and SFTP for saves and the task scheduler for scheduled restarts.
Four plans cover the range from a small group on The Island to a modded community on a large map - the comparison is on the product page.
What the difference means for running a server
Beyond visuals and the mod library, there are three points that matter in a server owner's everyday life:
- Startup time. Evolved loads a grown world in minutes - the newer edition takes noticeably longer. You notice that with every scheduled restart.
- Memory requirements. Both editions grow over time, but Ascended starts at a much higher level - see RAM requirements.
- Tools and guides. For Evolved, there is a collection of configuration knowledge that has grown over years. If you are looking for a specific setting, you will find it faster here.
For most groups, the decision is therefore a pragmatic one: Evolved is cheaper to run, starts faster and can be customized further. The configuration files have a similar structure in both editions - the basics from GameUserSettings.ini and Game.ini apply there in much the same way.
Can you switch later?
A save from Survival Evolved cannot be continued in Ascended - they are separate games with their own save formats. Switching therefore always means starting over, no matter which provider you use.
What you can take with you is your experience: rates, breeding values and rules that have worked for your group can be rebuilt in a new configuration. How these values work is explained in Adjust rates.
