Your own domain for your game serverSRV record for Minecraft, TeamSpeak & co.

Instead of an address like 203.0.113.10:25578, your server should simply say mc.yourcompany.com - without a port. That is exactly what the SRV record is for. At MainHoster.de, the game server wizard in DNS management creates it for you, together with the required A record. This guide shows what you enter, what is created and where it can get stuck.

Why an A record alone is not enough

An A record only answers the question of the IP address. If your server runs on a port other than the default, your fellow players would still have to enter it - mc.yourcompany.com:25578.

The SRV record solves exactly that: in addition to the target, it also publishes the port. The Minecraft client queries it on its own and connects to the port named there. For players, only mc.yourcompany.com remains. Because an SRV record must never point directly to an IP, an A record with the same subdomain always belongs with it.

With us: one form, both records

In your domain's DNS management, you do not have to create the SRV and A records individually. If you choose the type SRV for the new record, the game server wizard opens:

  1. Note the IP address and port of your Minecraft server from the panel - the same details you otherwise enter when joining.
  2. In DNS management, enter the desired name in subdomain, for example mc. For the domain itself, enter @.
  3. Choose SRV as the type and Minecraft Server as the server.
  4. Enter the server IP and port and save.
  5. In the Minecraft client, add the server with mc.yourcompany.com, without a port.

From this, the web interface automatically creates two records - the A record pointing to the IP and the SRV record pointing to it:

mc A 203.0.113.10
_minecraft._tcp.mc SRV 0 0 25578 mc.yourcompany.com.

The name with underscores, the dot at the end, priority and weight are set by the wizard itself. The typical typos with SRV records disappear. If you later change the IP or port, it adjusts the A record at the same time.

Main domain with @ or a subdomain?

Both work; the difference is only in the subdomain field:

  • @ stands for the domain itself. Your players then simply connect to yourcompany.com - it does not get any shorter.
  • mc, play or another name results in mc.yourcompany.com. That is the right route if a website lives under the main domain.

Important with @: the wizard sets the domain's A record to your game server's IP. If this A record has so far pointed to your website, it is overwritten - the website is then no longer reachable under the main domain. So only use @ if the domain exists solely for the server.

If you run several servers, simply create several records with their own names - survival, creative, modded - each with the matching port. Subdomains cost nothing extra.

Limits: Bedrock, default port and other games

  • Bedrock Edition does not evaluate SRV records. On console, mobile and the Windows edition, players enter address and port separately. A name via A record still works - see Set up crossplay and the overview for both editions in Minecraft server with your own domain.
  • Other games such as Rust, Palworld, CS2 or Terraria do not query SRV records. In the wizard, choose Other game server (A record) for them: only an A record is created, and the web interface shows you the address with port that your fellow players enter.
  • Server lists and tools sometimes continue to show IP and port. That is normal; the connection via the domain still works.

TeamSpeak and other services

For TeamSpeak 3, the wizard offers its own server type. It sets the record _ts3._udp with the voice port, so that the client also connects with the name only.

ServiceRecord nameDefault port
Minecraft (Java)_minecraft._tcp25565
TeamSpeak 3 (voice)_ts3._udp9987

Running your own TeamSpeak server on a VPS is described in Set up a TeamSpeak server.

If it does not work

  • Wrong port or wrong IP: the record contains your game server's port from the panel, not automatically 25565.
  • Name already taken: if there is already a CNAME on the chosen name, the wizard reports a conflict. Delete the old record or take another name.
  • Website suddenly gone: then the SRV record was set on @ and overwrote the website's A record. Move the server to a subdomain and let the A record for @ point to the website again.
  • A changed record does not take effect yet: our DNS records have a TTL of 24 hours. New records are usually there after a few minutes; a change to an existing one can take up to a day.
  • Check it yourself: nslookup -type=SRV _minecraft._tcp.mc.yourcompany.com on Windows or dig SRV _minecraft._tcp.mc.yourcompany.com on Linux and macOS. The answer must contain port and target.

Domain with another DNS provider?

If your domain's nameservers point to another provider, you create the two records there by hand:

  • an A record pointing to the server IP, for example with the name mc,
  • an SRV record with the name _minecraft._tcp.mc and the values priority 0, weight 0, your port and the target mc.yourcompany.com. - with a dot at the end.

Some interfaces split the values into separate fields (priority, weight, port, target), some append the domain name themselves. It is easier to manage the domain with us right away - see Change nameservers.

Frequently asked questions

Via an SRV record. At MainHoster.de, you choose the type SRV and the server type Minecraft Server in DNS management and enter subdomain, IP and port - the web interface creates the SRV and A records automatically. After that, the name is enough in the client.

Yes. Enter @ in the subdomain field, then players connect to yourcompany.com. The domain's A record then points to the game server - if a website lives there, better take a subdomain.

No. The Bedrock Edition does not evaluate SRV records. There, players enter address and port separately. A name via A record still works.

Not with us. The game server wizard automatically sets the A record with the same subdomain pointing to the server IP along with the SRV record. Only with an external DNS provider do you create both records yourself.

Yes. Create a separate record with its own name for each server, such as survival and creative, each with the matching port. Subdomains cost nothing extra.

Newly created records are usually reachable after a few minutes. If you change an existing record, it can take up to a day, because of the TTL of 24 hours, until all players see the new value.
