Minecraft server with your own domainplay.yourclan.com instead of IP and port - for Java and Bedrock

Nobody remembers a server address made of numbers and a port. With your own domain, your fellow players simply join via play.yourclan.com. Here is which domain you need, which records Java and Bedrock expect and what it all costs: a .de domain is available from us for €6.49 / year, a .com for €19.99 / year.

Why your own address is worth it

Every game server has a fixed address made of IP and port. It works, but it looks technical and is easily mistyped. A domain turns it into a name that suits your server:

  • Easy to remember - fellow players type play.yourclan.com instead of a string of numbers.
  • Independent of the server. If you move to a bigger plan or another machine, you only change the DNS record. The address everyone knows stays the same.
  • A professional appearance - in server lists, on Discord and in videos.
  • More than just the server. A website, email addresses and a verified Discord link can run under the same domain too.

Choose a domain and subdomain

For an international community, .com is the obvious extension; for a German-speaking community, .de is the natural and cheapest one. More important than the extension is the name: short, without chains of hyphens, easy to say out loud. Help with this is in Find a domain name.

Then the question of which name the server runs under:

  • Directly under the domain. Players connect to yourclan.com - it does not get shorter. In DNS management, you enter @ as the subdomain for this. That fits if the domain is only there for the server.
  • On a subdomain such as play., mc. or the game mode such as survival.. That is the right route as soon as a website is also supposed to live under the main domain. Subdomains cost nothing and are not limited (Set up a subdomain).

Java Edition: without a port thanks to an SRV record

In addition to the address, the Java Edition can query an SRV record that delivers the port along with it. Your players then only enter play.yourclan.com - without a colon and port number.

With us, you need a single form for this. In your domain's DNS management, you create a new record:

  1. Subdomain: play - or @ if the server should be reachable directly under yourclan.com.
  2. Type: SRV, with Minecraft Server as the server.
  3. Enter the server IP and port from your server's panel and save.

The web interface creates the SRV record and the associated A record automatically. You do not need to know about underscores, priorities or the trailing dot.

Caution with @: the domain's A record then points to the game server. If a website previously ran under yourclan.com, it is no longer reachable there - so rather use a subdomain. Exactly what is created is shown in the guide SRV record for Minecraft.

Bedrock Edition: address plus port

The Bedrock Edition does not evaluate SRV records. A name still works: for a pure Bedrock server, choose the option for other game servers (A record) in the same form. Then only an A record to the IP is created, and the web interface shows you the finished address with port. In the game, your fellow players enter the name under "Add Server" and the port in its own port field.

If your Java server runs with Geyser for Bedrock players, both groups use the same subdomain: Java players come in via the SRV record without a port, Bedrock players also enter the Bedrock port from the panel. Setting up Geyser is described in Play Java and Bedrock together.

Several servers under one domain

One domain is enough for any number of servers. For each one, you create a separate record in the form with its own name and its own port:

survival.yourclan.com → survival server
creative.yourclan.com → creative server
modded.yourclan.com → modpack server

If several servers are on the same IP, their A records point to the same address - they are only told apart by the port in the respective SRV record. You do not need a proxy of your own for this. You can additionally put the main server on @, as long as no website runs under the domain.

What it costs

A .de domain costs €6.49 / year with us, a .com domain €19.99 / year - with every renewal too, without a teaser price in the first year. For the .de, that works out at around €0.54 a month. A Minecraft server starts at €2.99 / month. Both run prepaid on the same credit and without a contract. All extensions and prices are on the domains page.

You set the records yourself in your domain's DNS management. New records are usually reachable after a few minutes. If you change the IP or port later, it can take up to a day because of the 24-hour TTL until all players see the new value. How that works exactly is explained in DNS records explained. You will find the server to go with it under Rent a Minecraft server.
