Set up Minecraft crossplayJava and Bedrock together - with Geyser & Floodgate

Do you want PC players (Java) and friends on console or phone (Bedrock) to play together on your server? With Geyser and Floodgate on a Paper server, that is exactly what you get. Here is how to set up crossplay step by step.

How does crossplay work?

Java and Bedrock are technically two different games and normally not compatible. Geyser is a proxy plugin that translates the Bedrock connection into the Java protocol in real time - so Bedrock players can join a Java server. Floodgate complements Geyser and lets Bedrock players join without having to own a Java account (Mojang/Microsoft).

The basis is a Paper or Purpur server, because Geyser/Floodgate run there as plugins.

Setup in the panel

  1. Set up a Paper or Purpur server in the panel.
  2. In the Minecraft setup, enable the option Crossplay (Geyser/Floodgate) - both plugins are installed and the Bedrock port is set.
  3. Alternatively, upload Geyser and Floodgate manually into the plugins/ folder and start the server.
  4. Java players connect via the IP and the Java port, Bedrock players via the IP and the Bedrock port - you will find both ports in the panel (the Bedrock default port 19132 is only a guide).

Good to know

Bedrock and Java players have slightly different mechanics (e.g. for redstone or PvP) - for most survival and building worlds, this hardly matters. So that Bedrock names are displayed cleanly, Floodgate gives them a prefix. For a pure console/phone experience without Java players, a pure Bedrock server is enough.

What Geyser and Floodgate each do

The two plugins are often mentioned in the same breath, but they have separate tasks - and that explains most setup questions:

  • Geyser translates between the two network protocols. It ensures that a Bedrock client can talk to a Java server at all.
  • Floodgate solves the account problem: Bedrock players have no Java account. Without Floodgate, everyone would also need a Minecraft Java account - with Floodgate, the existing Microsoft account is enough.

For a normal server, you need both. Geyser alone only works if all Bedrock players also have a Java account - in practice, never the case.

Both require a plugin-capable server, usually Paper. They cannot run on a pure vanilla server. How to add plugins is described in Install plugins & mods.

Two ports, two audiences

A crossplay server is reachable via two separate addresses, which is confusing at first. Java players keep using the normal server port. Bedrock players connect via the Geyser port, which is shown as a separate entry in the web interface.

Both belong to the same fixed server address made of IP and port - it is the same server, just a different entrance. So give your group both details separately, otherwise Bedrock players try the Java port and do not get through. The Bedrock default port 19132 is only a guide; what counts is the port shown in your panel.

On consoles, joining third-party servers is additionally restricted depending on the platform. On phone, tablet and Windows, adding the server directly works without problems - details in Join a server.

What to expect in operation

Crossplay works well, but not seamlessly. You should know these points before your group starts playing:

  • Redstone and PvP behave differently. Hardly noticeable for building and survival worlds, but noticeable for elaborate contraptions and competitive PvP.
  • Not every plugin copes with Bedrock players. Plugins with their own menus in particular sometimes show nothing or something different there.
  • Resource packs are handled differently. A Java resource pack does not reach Bedrock players, see Set up a resource pack.
  • Updates need patience. After a Minecraft update, Geyser has to catch up. Until then, Bedrock players may not be able to join.

Back up the server folder before plugin updates. Backups are self-service with us throughout, via WebFTP or SFTP, see Create backups.

Frequently asked questions

No. For crossplay, a single Paper server with Geyser and Floodgate is enough. Bedrock players connect to the same server via an additional Bedrock port.

No. That is exactly what Floodgate is for: it lets Bedrock players join without a Java/Mojang account.

Geyser/Floodgate run on Paper with plugins. Pure Forge/Fabric modpacks are not compatible with them - crossplay is intended for vanilla and plugin servers.
