Admin rights with ULXRanks, permissions and moderation in the game

Garry's Mod brings hardly any moderation tools out of the box. The community standard is called ULX - together with the related library ULib, you get ranks, graded permissions and a menu for kick, ban and everything in between. This guide shows the setup and a role model that has proven itself.

ULX & ULibRanksModeration

Why an admin addon?

Without an extension, you have hardly any ways to intervene in the game. For a round among friends, that is enough - as soon as the server is public, you need more: warn someone, kick, ban permanently, restart a round if in doubt.

ULX does exactly that. It has been the de facto standard for years, is correspondingly well documented, and practically every larger addon assumes that it is present.

Installation

  1. Provide ULib and ULX. Both belong together: ULib is the library, ULX the actual moderation interface. Easiest via your Workshop collection, alternatively by uploading into the addons folder.
  2. Restart the server. At startup, ULX creates its configuration files.
  3. Make yourself superadmin. This is done via an entry in the permission configuration on the server - via WebFTP or SFTP.
  4. Check in the game. As superadmin, you open the ULX menu and see all available commands.

After the first superadmin, everything else runs conveniently in the game: assign ranks, adjust permissions, manage players - without having to go back into files.

A role model that works

ULX comes with default ranks that are enough for most servers:

RankMay
PlayerNothing special - the normal case.
OperatorKick, warn, temporary ban, spectate players.
AdminAdditionally permanent bans, map changes, round control.
SuperadminEverything, including permission management.

The grading is not a question of mistrust but of damage control: an accidental map change in the middle of a TTT round annoys everyone - and happens exactly when everyone may do everything.

Adjust permissions

Beyond the default ranks, every single permission can be granted or revoked. Typical adjustments:

  • Give a moderator the ban command specifically, but without unlimited duration.
  • Lock tools that experience shows get abused.
  • Create your own ranks - for example for regulars with small privileges.
  • On DarkRP servers, grant permissions for job assignments and economic interventions separately.

A warning from practice: anyone who gives superadmin to everyone in their circle of friends usually regrets it after the first spontaneous map change. Better start tight and extend as needed.

Moderation that works

Tools are one thing, habits another. What has proven itself on grown servers:

  • Warn first, then act. Most rule violations are ignorance. A warning with a reason resolves more than an immediate ban.
  • Time-limit bans. A one-day ban almost always works just as well as a permanent one - and leaves room for insight.
  • Record decisions. Who was banned when and why should be traceable within the team, otherwise there will be arguments.
  • Make rules visible. What is written nowhere, nobody can follow - a short rules text on Discord or the website is enough.

Especially on DarkRP servers, moderation decides the character of the server far more than any setting in the configuration.

Keep server access separate

ULX controls what happens in the game. Everything beyond that - restarts, uploading files, adjusting the server.cfg - belongs on a different level.

For this, there are subusers in our web interface: you give team members specific access to console, files or restarts without sharing your account and without having to give them superadmin in the game. Two levels, cleanly separated - that is the structure that lets you sleep soundly even as the team grows.

When ULX does not take effect

  • The menu does not open. Usually ULib is missing - both addons belong together.
  • No superadmin. The entry in the permission configuration is missing or contains an incorrectly copied ID.
  • Permissions do not take effect. After changes to the files, a restart is required.
  • Conflict with another admin addon. Two systems at the same time lead to contradictory permissions - decide on one.

As always: the live console in the web interface shows at startup whether both addons loaded cleanly.
