Choice 1: vanilla or modded
The decision with the most consequences. It determines the resources, the effort and what your players will expect.
- Vanilla - pure DayZ, the way it was designed. Lowest requirement, hardly any maintenance, no mod updates that break your server.
- Modded - considerably more possibilities and considerably more work. Every mod update can require an adjustment.
If you are running a DayZ server for the first time, start with vanilla and add mods later. The most common frustration comes from a hand-picked mod collection that no longer starts on day two - usually because one mod has been updated and the others haven't caught up yet.

DayZ ships with official maps, and on top of that there is a large selection from the community:
| Map | Character | Effort |
|---|---|---|
| Chernarus | the classic, large and familiar | low |
| Livonia | official, more densely forested | low |
| Sakhal | official volcanic and ice island from the Frostline DLC | low - but every player needs the DLC |
| Community maps | for example Namalsk or Deer Isle | higher - map mod and matching mission needed |
The official maps are set via the mission template in serverDZ.cfg. For Sakhal, the server needs no license of its own, but anyone who wants to join must own Frostline - clarify that within your group before you switch. With community maps, the map mod, the mission and often custom loot tables come together. For getting started, one of the free official maps is the calmer route.
Choice 3: the rules of play
DayZ servers differ above all in how much they demand of the player. You should settle these points in advance:
- PvP or PvE - shapes the entire community.
- Loot density - finely adjustable via the Central Economy in the mission's XML files.
- Forced first person or free camera.
- Day/night cycle - permanently bright is friendlier for beginners, but less atmospheric.
- Player count - via
maxPlayersinserverDZ.cfg.
These points belong in the server description before the first player arrives - they decide who stays.
Choice 4: the resources
DayZ is at the upper end: vanilla typically needs 6-8 GB of memory, with DayZ Expansion and several mods you should plan for 10 GB or more. In our plans, that means S at €8.99 / month for a vanilla server and L at €20.99 / month as the usual tier for Expansion.
As everywhere: it isn't the slot count that drives the requirement, but the map, the mods and the persistent world. Slots are unlimited with us. All four plans with prices and which plan fits which project are in How much does a DayZ server cost?; the features of the server itself are on the DayZ product page.
If in doubt, choosing one tier bigger is the calmer route with DayZ, because mods are the biggest driver and rarely get fewer. You don't have to commit, though: you can switch to a bigger plan at any time as self-service in the customer interface, and map, mods and configuration are kept.
The first week: what to set up right away
After ordering, the order of steps matters more than speed. These points should be done before you advertise the server publicly:
- Set and test admin access. Enter the password, log in in-game and trigger a controlled restart once.
- Settle the basic settings. Server name, player count, signature verification and map are all in
serverDZ.cfg. Change them one at a time and restart in between - then you know immediately what caused a failed start. - Mods only after that. A server that demonstrably runs without mods is the basis for any later troubleshooting.
- Take the first backup as soon as the configuration is in place. Backups are self-service: you download the mission folder, the storage data and the configuration via SFTP or the web file manager.
- Document how to join: the fixed server address made of IP and port, plus the mod list as a Steam collection.
What comes after that is community work rather than technology. Servers that die rarely fail because of the hosting - mostly because nobody answers questions any more, mod updates pile up or the rules can't be found anywhere. A small, well-kept server lasts longer than a large one that nobody looks after after two weeks.
The honest time commitment
What is often underestimated - a DayZ server is maintenance work:
- After every DayZ update, mods have to catch up, otherwise nobody can get in.
- Mod updates in the Workshop can stop the server at any time - even without you changing anything.
- The .bikey files have to be copied again after every mod update.
- Backups are self-service - a corrupted save without a backup costs you the whole world.
A vanilla server on Chernarus largely runs by itself. A heavily modded server with Expansion and a community map is a regular hobby. Both are fine - you just need to know what you are getting into.
That is also why prepaid suits DayZ: if the group loses interest after a season, you simply stop topping up - no contract, no notice period. The details are on Game servers without a contract.
