Plans & pricesChoosing the right edition - the most common mistake
Better MC is not a single pack but a family. There are series maintained in parallel for Forge or NeoForge and for Fabric, and each series has its own number in the name. These numbers count up independently of each other - so a higher number does not automatically mean the newer Minecraft version.
How little the number says about the Minecraft version is shown by the current state: BMC4 (Forge) runs on Minecraft 1.20.1, BMC5 (NeoForge) on 1.21.1 - and the Fabric editions BMC2 and BMC3 are also on 1.20.1. A higher number therefore means neither a newer Minecraft version nor the same loader.
This leads to the mistake that happens by far the most often with this pack: the server gets one edition, the players install the other, and nobody gets in. So settle on exactly one edition before installation, note its full name including the version number and pass it on to all fellow players. For most groups, BMC4 is the obvious choice - it is the longest-maintained and by far the most downloaded edition.
Which series is better depends on the goal: the Fabric editions start faster and run a little lighter, the Forge editions have the larger selection of extra mods in case you want to extend later. The basics of both loaders are on Forge and Fabric.
Why Better MC fills storage faster than memory
Better MC lives from exploring. The pack scatters considerably more structures across the world than vanilla, plus additional biomes and, in most editions, further dimensions. Players therefore travel far - and every kilometre explored means newly generated and permanently stored chunks.
This shifts the bottleneck compared to tech packs such as ATM9: memory stays comparatively relaxed because hardly anything ticks permanently in the background. Instead, the world on disk grows noticeably faster. Plan L comes with 60 GB of NVMe, plan XL with 120 GB - for a Better MC group with several players, that is plenty, as long as you clean up old backups now and then.
The second consequence concerns peak load: when several players set off into unexplored terrain at the same time, the server generates many chunks at once - the classic moment when TPS drop briefly. That is normal and settles once the area has been explored.
What runs on the server and what only on the player's side
A large part of what makes Better MC does not happen on the server at all: shader support, reworked menus, animations, minimap and the bundled resource packs are purely client-side. That is why the pack demands noticeably more of weaker computers than of the server.
On the server side, structure generation, additional mobs and the dimensions count. If fellow players complain about stutter while server TPS sit at 20, it is down to the client side - then fewer shaders and a smaller view distance in the game help, not a bigger plan. How to tell the two apart is described in Lag and TPS.
Which plan for Better MC?
The thresholds below apply to this pack - a light Vanilla+ pack and a kitchen-sink pack with a hundred running machines behave completely differently. You can upgrade at any time without losing data and only pay the difference.
| Group | Plan | RAM | Price | Why | Order |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2-4 players | Plan M | 4 GB | €5.99 / month | Enough for a small group, as long as not everyone opens up new terrain at the same time. | Order M |
| 5-10 players | Plan L | 8 GB | €11.99 / month | The normal case. 8 GB absorb the peaks when generating new structures. | Order L |
| Public server | Plan XL | 16 GB | €21.99 / month | Many players at different ends of the map keep many chunks active permanently. | Order XL |
| Two players, relaxed | Plan M | 4 GB | €5.99 / month | Comfortably playable; plan S is too tight for the density of structures and mobs. | Order M |
The memory is taken proportionally from the plan via -XX:MaxRAMPercentage - you don't need to maintain a fixed -Xmx. The basics are covered in the RAM guide.
Setting up Better MC on the server
- Decide in advance which Better MC edition will be played - Forge/NeoForge or Fabric, including the version number. Give this name to all fellow players.
- Stop the server in the web interface.
- In the guided setup, choose the matching loader (Forge, NeoForge or Fabric) and search for the edition via the CurseForge installer.
- Under Startup, check that the Java version matches the edition's Minecraft version.
- Start the server and wait in the console for
Done. - Optionally set a server resource pack so that all players load the same look.
Common pitfalls with Better MC
Players are rejected when connecting
Cause: Client and server run different Better MC editions or versions - with series numbered in parallel, that happens quickly.
Fix: Distribute the full pack name including series and version to everyone and align server and clients to it.
Short drops while exploring
Cause: Several players generate new terrain at the same time; Better MC places more structures in the process than vanilla.
Fix: Keep the view distance on the server moderate and do not send everyone in unexplored directions at the same time. The effect disappears once the area has been generated.
Stutter only for individual fellow players
Cause: The pack's visual mods run on the client. The server is not involved.
Fix: Switch off shaders, lower the view distance in the game and give the client more memory. A bigger server plan does not change that.
The world takes up unexpectedly much storage
Cause: Additional dimensions and long exploration routes make the region files grow quickly.
Fix: Remove old backups from storage and switch to the next bigger plan if needed - the switch runs without data loss.
