Web hosting or VPS?The decision hinges on a single question

Web hosting and a VPS solve the same problem in two very different ways. This comparison shows what each is intended for, what they cost - and how to tell which variant suits your project.

The real difference: who administers

Technically, in both cases your website lives on a server in a data centre. The difference is the line of responsibility.

With web hosting, we run the operating system, the web server, the database and mail delivery. You get a self-contained area on a shared system, manage it via Plesk and take care exclusively of your content. System security updates run without you doing anything.

With a VPS, you get your own virtual machine with root access. You decide on the operating system and install any software you want. In return, you are responsible for updates, hardening, configuration and troubleshooting yourself - including the question of why the mail server has not accepted any mail since the last update.

When web hosting is the right choice

Choose web hosting if at least one of these points applies to you:

  • You want to run a website - company site, blog, club, portfolio or a shop based on a common system.
  • You work with WordPress, Joomla or a comparable CMS - or want to build the site entirely without a CMS via the website builder. Which of the two routes suits your project is clarified in Builder or WordPress.
  • You need email accounts under your own domain.
  • You do not want to deal with server configuration, firewall rules and update cycles.
  • You have no desire to patch a security hole in the web server while on holiday.

That is the normal case. A considerable share of the VPS plans rented for a single WordPress site would be cheaper, quicker to set up and more securely run as web hosting.

When you need a VPS

A VPS is the right choice as soon as you want to run software that goes beyond a web application:

  • Game servers for Minecraft, Rust, Palworld and other titles - they run as standalone processes and need free ports. See Host a Minecraft server on your VPS.
  • Docker containers or your own services that run permanently in the background - see Install Docker.
  • Applications in languages and frameworks that bring their own process - such as Python backends, Java applications or a Discord bot.
  • Special server software: your own mail server, VPN, voice server, monitoring.
  • Full control over the configuration, for example because an application requires specific system libraries or kernel settings.

What the comparison often overlooks

The price difference is smaller than the difference in effort. Between web hosting and a small VPS, there is only around a euro a month. The real difference is the time you put into administration - and that is not a one-off but permanent.

A VPS is not automatically faster. With a normal website, loading time and response behaviour almost always depend on caching, image sizes and the number of plugins, not on the server variant. A badly configured VPS is slower than well-maintained web hosting.

Security is work. With web hosting, system hardening is included in the service. With a VPS, it is yours - an unpatched system on the internet becomes a target within days.

And the route in between

The two do not exclude each other. A common split: the website and email accounts run on the web hosting, while an additional VPS takes on the special case - such as a game server or a self-developed application. Because both are billed prepaid, you can let the VPS expire again at any time.

And if your project outgrows the web hosting: moving to a VPS is possible, but not automatic - you take over the full administration with it. So first check whether a bigger web hosting plan is enough (see How much web space do I need?).

Frequently asked questions

Not fundamentally. With a normal website, caching, image sizes and the number of plugins determine loading time far more than the server variant. A VPS only brings real advantages if you need resources exclusively or want to run your own software - and then only with a clean configuration.

No. Game servers run as standalone processes with their own ports and therefore need a VPS or a dedicated game server. Web hosting is designed for web applications and email.

Web hosting starts at €1.99 / month, a VPS at €2.95 / month. The price difference is small - what matters is the effort: with web hosting, system administration is included in the price; with a VPS, you do it yourself.

Yes. Root access means that you install, configure and keep up to date the operating system, web server, database and firewall yourself. Without Linux basics, a VPS is a risk - with web hosting, you need no prior knowledge at all.

Yes, switching is possible at any time, because both products run prepaid and without a minimum term. The move itself is manual work, however: files, databases and mail accounts have to be transferred and the new server set up.

Undecided? Start with web hosting

Because both run prepaid and without a minimum term, switching later is straightforward. If you only want to run a website, web hosting is almost always the better choice - and saves you the server administration.
