.de or .com?Which domain extension suits your project

The extension helps decide who notices your site, how credible it appears and what it costs per year. This comparison puts .de, .com and the other extensions into context - with a clear recommendation depending on what you are planning.

.de.com.eu.at & .ch

The short recommendation

  • German audience, local business, club: .de. It is the default expectation in Germany - anyone typing an address from memory adds .de.
  • International product, software, brand: .com. Understood worldwide and the obvious choice as soon as customers outside Germany come into play.
  • Planning both: register both, run one as the main address and redirect the other to it via 301.

Measured by the number of domains, .de is the third-largest extension in the world and by far the largest country extension in Europe. For a German audience, it is therefore not a makeshift solution but the stronger choice. The requirements for owners abroad are explained in Domain owner & Admin-C.

What the extension means for SEO

Two effects that are often confused:

  • Geographic targeting: a country extension such as .de clearly signals the target market to search engines. With generic extensions such as .com, this signal must come from language, content and links.
  • Ranking advantage through keywords in the domain: practically non-existent now. cheap-servers.com does not rank better just because the words are in the domain. Brand, content and links matter more.

So the extension is a market signal, not a ranking lever. Switching it just to fit in a keyword is not worth it.

If your preferred name is taken

The most common case. Try these in order before you turn to the aftermarket - more idea patterns and the trademark check are in Find the right domain name:

  1. Another extension - the same name with .de instead of .com or vice versa.
  2. Add a word - place, industry or a verb: yourcompany-berlin.de, yourcompanyshop.de.
  3. Invented word - short, pronounceable, easy to spell. Brands work better this way than descriptive names.
  4. Aftermarket - only if the name is truly irreplaceable. Good names trade there for four-figure sums.

Names that work in everyday life

  • Can be dictated over the phone. If you have to spell it on every call, the name is too complicated.
  • Use hyphens sparingly. One is fine, three are a source of errors.
  • Avoid numbers. "4" or "four" - users guess wrong.
  • Check trademark rights. A domain containing someone else's trademark can get expensive. A look into the relevant trademark register costs nothing - in Germany, that of the DPMA.
  • Think about umlauts. See Umlaut domains & IDN - the spelled-out variant is usually the better main address.

Registering several extensions - is it worth it?

For brands yes, for projects rarely. The second extension protects against typo traffic and against someone else appearing under your name.

What matters then is a clean implementation: one address is the main address, all others redirect to it via 301. If you run the same site in parallel under several domains, you create duplicate content and split your visibility. How to set up such a redirect is shown in .htaccess redirects.

Frequently asked questions

If your offer is aimed at a German audience, take .de - users expect this extension and type it automatically. If your project is internationally oriented, .com is the obvious choice. If you plan both, register both and redirect one to the other via 301.

For visitors outside Germany, a .de address clearly looks German, which is an advantage or a disadvantage depending on the offer. Search engines additionally assign the site to Germany. For an internationally oriented product, .com is therefore more suitable.

Practically not anymore. Keywords in the domain name have not been a relevant ranking factor for years. Brand, content and links decide - a memorable name is more valuable in the long run than a descriptive domain.

Natural persons resident in the EU, EU citizens resident outside the EU, and companies and organizations with a registered office in the EU.

Technically yes, advisable no. Identical content under several domains creates duplicate content and splits visibility. Better is one main domain to which all others redirect via 301.

Currently .de, .com, .net, .org, .info, .biz, .eu, .at and .ch. The current annual prices are listed on the domains page.
